Within this paper, reproduction traits of the Adriatic population European hake, Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758), were investigated. Specimens of the target species were monthly collected (N=1173) during 2019 along the eastern Adriatic Sea with commercial bottom trawlers. Overall, European hake total body length varied between 15.5 and 49.5 cm (mean±SD=27.5±5.0 cm) and domination of females was noted in larger length classes (TL>31.0 cm). The sexual ratio of all specimens was m/f=0.64; male prevalence was established over the year, except during the spawning peaks (December, June) when the sex ratio was in favour of the females. According to European hake’s maturity stages, gonad weights, gonadosomatic indexes and histological analysis of the gonad tissues, this species in Adriatic spawn twice in one year; the spawning period was from December to February, while second smaller signs of spawning were observed at the beginning of the summer, in June. 50% of the European hake male and female specimens sexually matured at 20.7 cm and 22.4 cm of total length, respectively.

In this study, the age and some growth characteristics of the European hake, Merluccius merluccius, from the northeastern Mediterranean were examined during 2015-2016 fishing season. A total of 661 European hake ranging from 9.8 to 51.6 cm in total length was captured by commercial trawler. Female/male ratio was 1/1.15. Age determination was conducted using the sagittal otoliths. Ages of examined individuals ranged from 1 to 7 years. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters fitted to the average measured total lengths-at-age for each sex separately and estimated as L∞= 93.98 cm, k= 0.114 year-1, t0= -0.597 year for females, as L∞= 77.65 cm , k= 0.153 year-1, t0= -0.343 year for males and as L∞= 84.44 cm, k= 0.135 year-1, t0= -0.469 year for combined sexes. The growth performance value (Φ) of the European hake population was computed as 2.98 for combined sexes. Mean condition factor value for population was 0.654±0.021; the highest condition factor was found as 1.01 in fish at age 7.

The aim of this study was to provide a first approximation of the growth, reproduction, and length–weight relationships of Symphodus ocellatus in the southeastern Black Sea, Turkey. A total of 320 specimens (273 males, 47 females) were collected between June 2015 and May 2016, and their biological parameters were estimated for each sex and both sexes combined. Total length ranged from 6.90 to 13.70 cm and the parameters (a, b) in the power length–weight relationships were a = 0.065 and b = 2.38 for males and a = 0.102 and b = 2.20 for females. Age was successfully estimated by commonly accepted procedures for otolith analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters from the otolith age estimation were L∞ = 12.66 cm, k = 0.764, and t0 = –1.151 (0–3 years) for males, and L∞ = 14.15 cm, k = 0.764, and t0 = –0.188 (1–3 years) for females. The monthly gonadosomatic index values reflected a spawning period between April and July, with a spawning peak in May–June. The present study provides the first estimate of the growth and reproduction of S. ocellatus in the southeastern Black Sea of Turkey and compares the results with those from other areas.
