Secondary dentine deposition is responsible for the decrease in the volume of the pulp cavity with age. Therefore, the volume of the pulp cavity can be considered as a predictor for estimating age. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship strength between canine pulp volumes and chronological age from homogenous (approximately equal numbers of individuals in each age range) age distribution and to assess the effect of sex as predictor in age estimation. This study was performed on 719 subjects of Pakistani origin. Cone beam computed tomography images of 521 left maxillary and 681 left mandibular canines were collected from 368 females and 349 males aged from 15 to 65 years. Planmeca Romexis® software was used to trace the outline of the pulp cavity and to calculate pulp volumes. Regression analysis was performed to assess the correlation between pulp volumes considering with and without sex as a predictor with chronological age. The obtained results showed that mandibular canine pulp volume and sex have the highest predictive power (R2 = 0.33). The relationship between mandibular canine pulp volume and sex with chronological age demonstrates an odd S-shaped non-linear relationship. A statistically significant difference in volumes of pulp was found (p = 0.000) between males and females. The conclusion was that predictions using the pulp volume of the mandibular canine and sex produced the best estimates of chronological age.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1007/s00414-019-02147-5) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

For medicolegal purposes, orthodontic or orthognathic treatment various stomatological staging technique for age estimation with appliance of conventional radiographic images have been published. It remains uninvestigated if cone beam computer-tomography delivers comparable staging results to the conventional radiographic stages of third molar analysis. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of 312 patients aged 13–21 years. Dental age estimation staging technique, introduced by Nolla and Demirjian, were applied on the left lower third molar imaged by conventional panoramic radiographs and cone beam computer-tomography. It was investigated if 2D and 3D imaging presented different staging results for dental age estimation. In 21% the Demirjian’s staging differed by a single stage between 2 and 3D images. The greatest congruence (87%) between 2 and 3D images was revealed for stage 7 (G). In contrary, stage 5 (E) presented the lowest level of congruence with 47.4%. The categorization of Nolla revealed divergences in staging for than two categorical variables in Nolla’s stages 3, 4, 5 and 6. In general, the analysis of the data displayed the divergence for Nolla’s stages 4–8. The staging results for 2D and 3D imaging in accordance to the rules of Nolla and Demirjian showed significant differences. Individuals of 18 years may present immature third molars, thus merely an immature third molar cannot reject legal majority. Nolla’s and Demirjian’s 2D and 3D imaging present significantly different staging results.

Bu retrospektif çalışmada, diş gelişiminin değerlendirilmesinde kullanılan Demirjian ve Moorrees yöntemlerinin, iki farklı araştırmacı tarafından değerlendirilmesi ve araştırmacılar arasındaki uyumun belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada 382 adet panoramik film iki farklı araştırmacı tarafından Demirjian ve Moorrees yöntemleri kullanılarak premolar ve molar dişlerin gelişim seviyeleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Her iki yöntem için öncelikle, her araştırmacının kendi içindeki uyumu kappa testi ile değerlendirilmiş ve yeterli bulunduktan sonra araştırmacıların birbirleri arasındaki uyumları da yine kappa testi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen değerler istatistiksel olarak analiz edildiğinde p<0.05 olan değerler anlamlı kabul edilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışmadan elde edilen veriler değerlendirildiğinde, her araştırmacının kendi içerisindeki uyumunun değerlendirildiği Kappa test skorları Demirjian yönteminde, her araştırmacı için sırasıyla 0.84 ve 0.81 olarak tespit edilirken; Moorrees yönteminde ise yine sırasıyla 0.86 ve 0.90 olarak tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen kappa test skorlarına göre her iki yöntem için de yeterli uyum izlenirken, Moorrees yöntemi kullanıldığında araştırmacıların gösterdikleri uyumunun daha iyi olduğu fakat istatistiksel olarak anlamlılık göstermediği bulgulanmıştır (p≥0.05). Sonuç: Demirjian ve Moorrees yöntemlerinin her ikisinin de iki farklı araştırmacı tarafından uygulandığında benzer şekilde başarılı derecede uyumlu olduğu ve yapılması planlanan daha uzun dönem çalışmalarda her ikisinin de diş gelişim düzeyinin belirlenmesinde güvenle kullanılabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.
