“…The difference arises from the stronger interaction that the sulfate and pyruvate groups of agar form with water molecules, resulting in higher viscosity and consistency of the media, compared to the interaction between the hydroxyl moieties of starch and water molecules. A decrease in media consistency and solidification was also reported by Jain and Babbar (2011) and by Lucyszyn et al (2006) in the partial substitution of agar with guar gum, isubgol or xanthan, and with galactomannans, respectively. However, that lowers viscosity of the culture media showed positive effects on the plantlets growth.…”

“…An interaction between the cytokinin content and the gelling agents used was also observed in other experiments with blackberry (Fira et al 2010) and Aloe polyphylla (Ivanova and van Staden 2011). A stimulating effect of galactomannan extracted from guar gum was also proven in strawberry (Lucyszyn et al 2006a) and in Nicotiana tabacum (Lucyszyn et al 2007). In these experiments, the blends improved the quality of the shoots, including the rooting parameters, for both species and leaf parameters in Nicotiana.…”

“…First, the ground seeds were submitted to an extraction of pigments and lipids with ethyl ether under reflux in a Soxhlet system. The isolation of the galactomannan (GM) was done as described by Lucyszyn et al [9] The GM had a Manannose:Galactose (Man:-Gal) ratio of 2.1, determined by alditol acetate composition [10] and confirmed by 1 H and 13 C NMR, in D 2 O at 75 8C, from the integrals of the anomeric regions (data not shown).…”
