Ag microparticles embedded in Si nanowire arrays: a novel catalyst for gas-phase oxidation of high alcohol to aldehyde

Abstract: A novel catalyst of silver microparticles embedded in a silicon nanowire array support (Ag@SiNW) was prepared by an in situ electroless metal deposition method; it exhibited high selectivity and stability for gas-phase oxidation of high alcohol to its corresponding aldehyde.

“…49 The target product of this reaction, 1-octanal (16), is a synthetically useful intermediate of organic synthesis and a food flavor. In addition, Scheme 11 showed the relationship between the conversion/selectivity of 1-octanol (15) oxidation and reaction temperature over this silver nanocatalyst.…”

“…Silver materials have attracted tremendous attention in recent years due to numerous applications including surfaceenhanced Raman scattering (SERS), catalysis, optoelectronics, and biomedicine [1][2][3]. Generally, the intrinsic properties of silver materials can be effectively tailored by controlling their size, shape, composition, crystallinity, and structure.…”

“…[1,2] The traditional methods usually employ noncatalytic processes involving toxic and hazardous oxidants, such as chromates, hypochlorites, and permanganates in stoichiometric or large excess, often generating large amounts of inorganic salt containing effluents. “…[3] Recently, many investigations have focused on catalytic oxidation using environmentally friendly oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which is more active than O 2 and has H 2 O as the only byproduct. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Thus far, many transition-metal compounds have been used as catalysts for the oxidation of alcohols by H 2 O 2 . [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] For example, various vanadium compounds exhibit efficient catalysis toward the oxidation of alkanes, olefins, and alcohols by H 2 O 2 , [19,[22][23][24][25][26] although the toxicity of which limits their large scale application.…”
