Afraid to lose out: the impact ofkiasuismon practitioner research in Singapore schools

Abstract: Many contemporary education systems encourage the notion of the teacher as practitioner-researcher as part of their professional learning agenda. Simultaneously, it is acknowledged that practitioner research might be remodelled in local contexts when used to support educational reform. This paper describes respondents' theories of how a particular cultural phenomenon, 'kiasuism', profoundly shapes the type of work teachers do as researchers in Singapore schools. 'Kiasu' can be defined as the notion of 'being a… Show more

“…Parents also typically expect children to be familiar with numbers, be able to count, add, and subtract. Their anxieties reflect the strong emphasis that Asian societies place on children's academic excellence (see also Berthelsen et al 2011;Ellis 2014;Li and Rao 2005).

“…The very objective of teachers' transforming pedagogies would inevitably have positive impact on transforming the education system and society. The need to modify or remodel action research approaches to fit local contexts has been increasingly recognized (Ellis, 2014;Somekh & Zeichner, 2009). Nevertheless, some may argue that the remodelling of action research could go the other way of 'becoming anything and everything ' (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1999).…”
