“…Butler et al () conducted a careful evaluation of freshwater mussel population enhancement techniques and found that culture to larger subadult sizes improved outcomes relative to releasing glochidia‐infected fish or small juveniles. These results present an interesting parallel with earlier studies of forest restoration in South America, which found that planted tree seedlings offered improved survival (Catalán et al ) and an increased number of species able to establish and survive (Knowles & Parrotta ) relative to direct sowing with seeds.…”

“…Despite the benefits of direct sowing, the initial phase of seedling establishment seems to be the most critical. Comparing direct sowing with the planting of seedlings, Catalan et al (1994) recorded improved seedling performance for planted seedlings over 9 months in a Chaco area in Argentina. For two of the species studied, the survivorship rates were 60 to 80% for planted seedlings, versus 35 to 45% for directly sown seeds.…”

“…By comparison, direct sowing is easier, simpler, and cheaper than planting seedlings (Shen & Hess 1983). This technique has been reported for the rehabilitation of gallery forests (Barbosa et al 1992, 1996) and drainage channels (Sun et al 1995), the restoration of impoverished forests (Catalan et al 1994; Hardwick et al 1997), the enrichment of forests after logging (Guariguata & Pinard 1998), and the restoration of degraded lands after mining (Parrotta & Knowles 1999).…”

“…Las tareas de reposición fueron realizadas por una cuadrilla de 6 personas, repartidos en dos grupos de 3 personas, los cuales trabajaron de manera conjunta en distintos sectores. Como sugieren Catalán et al (1994), la reposición de plantas se efectuó a finales de verano para garantizar la supervivencia de las plántulas.…”
