Active restoration in aquatic systems is relatively underdeveloped. Aquaculture, often called gardening or artificial/controlled propagation in this context, is increasingly important in the theory and practice of aquatic restoration. This RE‐New contribution explores current ideas and examples in restoration aquaculture. Challenges exist, and these must be acknowledged and addressed. As impacts to aquatic systems persist, the next 25 years should see a greater role for aquaculture and seeds planted now will be important to future efforts. Eventually, aquaculture may be linked to aquatic systems restoration just as silviculture has been linked to forest restoration.

Deforestation in the Amazon Basin is still increasing, and the rehabilitation of these lands continues to be a challenge. Autoecological studies of most Amazonian species are rare, and efficient techniques for restoration of forested habitats have yet to be developed. The aim of this study was to test direct sowing as a rehabilitation technique for sites with different degrees of disturbance: bare soil, pasture, and secondary and mature forests in Central Amazonia, Brazil. At each site, we sowed seeds of 11 native tree species. Throughout the following year we evaluated germination and seedling survival. The germination differed according to the study site and species. Seedling survival in degraded sites was higher than in other areas. After 1 year in the bare soil site, 33% of the sown seeds of eight species developed seedlings; in the pasture the establishment was 23%, in secondary forest 15%, and in mature forest 12% of only four species. The only widespread survivor with more than 45% emergence in all perturbed sites was Caryocar villosum. No pioneer seedlings remained after 1 year. There was a positive correlation between seed size and survival. Large‐seeded non‐pioneer species seem to be more suitable for direct sowing than small‐seeded species. We recommend a combination of direct sowing and planting of seedlings as an appropriate means to accelerate the rehabilitation of degraded areas in Central Amazonia.

El costo de implantación de una especie forestal no solo contempla la actividad de plantación en sí, sino, además, el de su posterior reposición de fallas. El objetivo del presente estudio fue describir y determinar el rendimiento de las tareas de control de prendimiento y reposición de fallas en plantaciones de Prosopis alba Griseb. (algarrobo blanco) bajo la influencia de factores edáficos como pH y conductividad eléctrica. La investigación se centró en el marco del Programa Forestal Santiagueño (PFS), Argentina, ejecutado durante la campaña de forestación 2017–2018. La muestra estuvo conformada por 3 productores con parcelas ubicadas en el departamento Robles de la provincia de Santiago del Estero. El trabajo de campo permitió registrar las tareas de control de prendimiento y reposición de fallas y a su vez, evaluar el establecimiento de las plantas bajo diferentes factores edáficos. El estudio refleja un porcentaje de pérdida promedio de plantas de un 17 %, y demuestra que la reposición de 75 plantas de algarrobo requiere 0,12 jornales (0,96 h). Se evidencia una fuerte correlación entre las variables CE (ds/m) y mortandad de plantas, en este sentido se obtuvo un modelo estadístico capaz de estimar la mortandad de plantas en función de la CE del suelo.
