Affordances perspective and grammaticalization: Incorporation of language, environment and users in the model of semantic paths

Abstract: The present paper demonstrates that insights from the affordances perspective can contribute to developing a more comprehensive model of grammaticalization. The authors argue that the grammaticalization process is afforded differently depending on the values of three contributing parameters: the factor (schematized as a qualitative-quantitative map or a wave of a gram), environment (understood as the structure of the stream along which the gram travels), and actor (narrowed to certain cognitive-epistemological… Show more

“…As older waves are "catastrophically" removed, younger waves are rapidly extended to semantic spaces newly liberated (cf. Andrason 2008, Andrason andVisser 2015). In contrast, the younger wave has travelled the stream to a lesser extent and covers the areas more to the left in the figure.…”

“…The horizontal axis not only serves as an explanatory vehicle for the cohesion of senses offered by a given gram, but may also be imagined as representing a grammaticalisation channel, which is recursively activated in a language and has been travelled by several grams of this language. This channel has been referred to as 'a stream' (Andrason 2015a(Andrason , 2016a(Andrason , 2016band Andrason and Visser 2015).…”

“…Prototypical senses are common, whereas non-prototypical senses are rare. 1 A simultaneous codification of such qualitative and quantitative information delivers a wave (Andrason, Visser 2015;Andrason 2016aAndrason , 2016b. In this model, the horizontal x axis indicates the path with which the semantic potential of a form can be mapped (this corresponds to the qualitative mapping).…”

“…from 0% to 100% or, in approximated and relative terms, for instance as void, non-prototypical, semi-prototypical, and prototypical). The correlation of the arguments of the qualitative x axis with the values of the quantitative y axis delivers the form of a wave (Andrason, Visser 2015;Andrason 2016aAndrason , 2016b.…”
