Aeromonas salmonicida ssp. salmonicida lacking pigment production, isolated from farmed salmonids in Finland

Abstract: Strains of Aeromonas salmonicida ssp. salmonisalrnonicida ssp. masoucida, and several isolates not cida lacking pigment production were isolated from brown assigned to any of the valid subspecies, trout Salmo trutta m. lacustris and sea trout S. trutta m. trutta Recently a fourth subspecies, A. salmonicida ssp. cultivated in fresh water in south Finland. The bacteria isolated showed only minor deviations in biochen~ical character-

“…On the other hand, a pigment producing strain appeared to be intermediate in virulence. Wiklund, Lönnström & Niiranen (1993) reported a very slow pigment‐producing A. salmonicida ssp. salmonicida isolate to be highly virulent in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), subsequent to i.p.…”

“…However, as stated by Wiklund & Dalsgaard (1998), an atypical strain can be defined only as a strain which does not fit into the existing classification of A. salmonicida ssp. salmonicida , although studies have been published ascribing isolates showing atypical or aberrant biochemical characteristics, such as late‐pigmentation ( Wiklund et al . 1993 ), as typical strains.…”

“…Two A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida reference strains were included: a non‐pigment producing strain P110A/91 from brown trout, Salmo trutta m. lacustris L. (Wiklund, Lönnström & Niiranen 1993) and an A‐layer positive A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strain MT423 (Hirst & Ellis 1994).…”

“…Identification of a microbial pathogens isolate usually follows a series of morphological, biochemical, immunological, and molecular techniques. For the identification of A. salmonicida and Y. ruckeri from affected fish farm, different morphological and biochemical test are practiced in the world wide (Stevenson and Daly, 1982;Wiklund et al, 1993;Gudmundsdottir, 1998;Dalsgaard and Madsen, 2000;Welch et al, 2011). The accurate identification of bacteria would help to take proper steps to control the disease before massive economical loss.…”
