Aerobic Exercise Reduces Asthma Phenotype by Modulation of the Leukotriene Pathway

Abstract: IntroductionLeukotrienes (LTs) play a central role in asthma. Low- to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (AE) reduces asthmatic inflammation in clinical studies and in experimental models. This study investigated whether AE attenuates LT pathway activation in an ovalbumin (OVA) model of asthma.MethodsSixty-four male, BALB/c mice were distributed into Control, Exercise (Exe), OVA, and OVA + Exe groups. Treadmill training was performed at moderate intensity, 5×/week, 1 h/session for 4 weeks. Quantification of b… Show more

“…IHC images (5 airways and 15 parenchymal fields) from each slide of each mouse from all experimental groups were taken using an Olympus BX40 microscope at ×400 magnification and CellSens software. The percent epithelial area positive for IL-10 and NF-κB as well as the number of positive cells per square millimeter of parenchymal tissue were presented as previously described [17-19]. …”

“…It was demonstrated that aerobic exercise reduces nuclear factor kappa light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) activation and increases release of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10 [ 70 ]. Low- to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise was found to reduce asthmatic inflammation in clinical and experimental models [ 71 ].…”

“…Is it widely accepted that exercise training can ameliorate several pulmonary inflammatory symptoms [ 13 15 ], in a general way, due to the prominent anti-inflammatory effects associated. For instance, previous investigations on asthma models have identified that aerobic exercise training reduces the activity of leukotrienes and their mediators [ 22 ]. Leukotrienes are proactive inflammatory bioactive molecules, derived from the inflammatory lipoxygenase pathway, that act on the respiratory system as bronchoconstrictor, in the formation of edema, in mucus hypersecretion, and in the proliferation, activation, and survival of inflammatory cells [ 23 , 24 ].…”
