Aerial Pollutants in Swine Buildings: A Review of Their Characterization and Methods to Reduce Them

Abstract: The swine industry follows a large increase of meat production since the 1950s causing the development of bigger swine buildings which involves a raise of pollutants emissions. Due to recent anthropological pressures concerning the animal welfare, the limitation of neighborhood disturbances and atmospheric pollutions limitations, the livestock farming has to adapt their management methods to reduce or treat the aerial pollutants emissions. Through the diversity of livestock barns configurations, their climatic… Show more

“…Increases in wind speed results in increased ventilation rates in naturally ventilated buildings (Joo et al, 2014;Wang et al, 1999;Boulard and Draoui, 1995). On the other hand, research has also revealed that increasing ventilation rate is the most effective method for reducing air pollutant concentrations in buildings (Hamon et al, 2012;Topisirovic and Radivojevic, 2005;Baptista et al, 1999).…”

“…All of these systems use slatted floors (USEPA, 2001). The pit system allows the animal waste to fall through the slats directly into a pit and is collected in liquid form (Hamon et al, 2012). Manure storage is in either an anaerobic lagoon or an external storage facility.…”

“…Odors from swine CAFOs are primarily comprised of NH 3 and H 2 S emissions (Cole et al, 2000;Hamon et al, 2012). Emissions of odors are dependent on seasonal and climatic parameters, as is the case with other CAFOs.…”
