COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that represents a great global health concern. It is transmitted between individuals through respiratory particles, and as there is no established effective treatment currently for the virus, it is necessary to use protective strategies such as face masks. Healthcare providers and individuals serving outdoors are required to work for long durations wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Wearing such protective equipment may have short-or long-term effects on the skin health of these individuals. We aim to assess the prevalence and types of dermatological manifestations associated with wearing PPE for a long time during the COVID-19 pandemic period by reviewing the previous studies conducted on this subject.The medical literature, including the databases of PubMed and Google Scholar, from 2019 to 2021 was explored. The search terms included a combination of "Impact of PPE and dermatological outcome," "Wearing PPE for a long time and dermatological manifestations," "Face mask-wearing and dermatological complications," and "Wearing PPE and dermatological manifestations." The inclusion criteria are original full-text articles that reported the association of wearing PPE and dermatological manifestations and outcomes.A total of 70 articles were obtained, among which only 10 articles were eligible for the inclusion criteria. These 10 studies included a total number of 7,643 participants and covered different countries of the world. The extracted data were summarized in a table to facilitate the collection of the important findings.Dermatological complications are frequently reported in people wearing PPE and face masks, especially the ones caused due to PPE among healthcare providers as they tend to use these protective measures for longer durations.

Introduction The second wave of COVID-19 greatly affected the health care and education systems in Uganda, due to the infection itself and the lockdowns instituted. Double masking has been suggested as a safe alternative to double-layered masks, where the quality of the latter may not be guaranteed. This study aimed to determine patterns of double mask use among undergraduate medical students at Makerere University, Uganda. Methods We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire. All students enrolled at the College of Health Sciences; Makerere University received the link to this questionnaire to participate. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess factors associated with double mask use. Results A total of 348 participants were enrolled. The majority (61.8%) were male; the median age was 23 (range: 32) years. Up to 10.3%, 42%, and 4.3% reported past COVID-19 positive test, history of COVID-19 symptoms, and having comorbidities, respectively. Up to 40.8% had been vaccinated against COVID-19. More than half (68.7%) believed double masking was superior to single masking for COVID-19 IPC, but only 20.5% reported double masking. Participants with a past COVID-19 positive test [aOR: 2.5; 95% CI: 1.1–5.8, p = 0.026] and participants who believed double masks had a superior protective advantage [aOR: 20; 95% CI: 4.9–86.2, p < 0.001] were more likely to double mask. Lack of trust in the quality of masks (46.5%) was the most frequent motivation for double masking, while excessive sweating (68.4%), high cost of masks (66.4%), and difficulty in breathing (66.1%) were the major barriers. Conclusion Very few medical students practice double masking to prevent COVID-19. Coupled with inconsistencies in the availability of the recommended four-layered masks in Uganda and increased exposure in lecture rooms and clinical rotations, medical students may be at risk of contracting COVID-19.

Facial dermatoses induced by face masks: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational studies

The use of masks for infection control was common in the COVID‐19 pandemic. As numerous cross‐sectional studies have suggested a link between the use of such masks and various facial dermatoses, a systematic review and meta‐analysis of published studies was conducted to evaluate this association, as well as potential risk factors for the development of such facial dermatoses. Observational studies were searched for in MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register. Thirty‐seven observational studies with a total of 29 557 study participants were identified. This study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 checklist and quality was assessed via the Newcastle‐Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale., Overall prevalence of facial dermatoses was 55%. Individually, acne, facial dermatitis, itch and pressure injuries were consistently reported as facial dermatoses, with a pooled prevalence of 31%, 24%, 30% and 31%, respectively. Duration of mask‐wear was the most significant risk factor for the development of facial dermatoses (95% CI: 1.31–1.54, p < 0.001). Overall, facial dermatoses associated with mask wear are common, and consist of distinct entities. They are related to duration of use. Appropriate and tailored treatment is important to improve the outcomes for these affected patients.
