Adverse effects of atrazine on blood parameters, biochemical profile and genotoxicity of snow trout (Schizothorax plagiostomus)

Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate the adverse effects of atrazine on hematology, biochemistry and genotoxicity of snow trout ( Schizothorax plagiostomus ). Almost all treated groups presented considerably ( P < 0.05) lesser values of hematocrit, hemoglobin, WBC, RBC, MCH, MCHC, monocytes and lymphocytes while significantly higher values of HCT and platelets are observed. A Significant decrease is observed in sodium, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, triglycerides… Show more

“…The hematological indices are recommended for evaluating the metabolic and immunological status of fish suffering from toxic and pathogenic stressors [ 45 , 46 ]. The levels of hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBCs) indicate the anemic and respiration capacity of blood cells, whereas hematocrit (PCV) and white blood cell (WBCs) levels show the immunological status of fish [ 47 ].…”

“…However, exposure to ATZ result in impaired Hb, PCV, RBCs, and WBCs, probably due to oxidative stress and low metabolic function [ 15 ]. Similarly, chirruh snowtrout ( Schizothorax esocinus ) [ 45 , 48 ] exposed to ATZ had deteriorated hematological traits while fish fed fucoidan had enhanced hematological indices.…”

“…Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6isopropylamino-1, 3, 5 triazine) is the active substance of a plant protection product belonging to the triazine chemical family which has a herbicidal effect. It is widely used in agriculture to control weeds in various crops, such as maize, sorghum, and sugarcane [34,35]. Atrazine is a weak base with the chemical formula C 8 H 14 ClN 5 , a molecular weight of 215.68 g mol −1 , and a low solubility in water (35 mg L −1 at 25 °C) but a high solubility in organic solvents, with a log K OW partition coefficient of 2.61.…”

“…Other researchers reported similar results when Oreochromis mossambicus exposed to zinc nano particles [45], Schizothorax plagiostomus exposed to Atrazine [46], Schizothorax esocinus exposed to cypermethrin [47], Schizothorax esocinus exposed to Atrazine [48], Oreochromis mossambicus exposed to Chlorpyrifos [49].…”
