Advances of ECG Sensors from Hardware, Software and Format Interoperability Perspectives

Abstract: It is well-known that cardiovascular disease is one of the major causes of death worldwide nowadays. Electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor is one of the tools commonly used by cardiologists to diagnose and detect signs of heart disease with their patients. Since fast, prompt and accurate interpretation and decision is important in saving the life of patients from sudden heart attack or cardiac arrest, many innovations have been made to ECG sensors. However, the use of traditional ECG sensors is still prevalent in the… Show more

“…Various authors have recently compared and provided extensive reviews on complementary standards dealing with ECG formats (DICOM, EDF, HL7 aECG, MFER, PDF-ECG, etc.) and on converters between different ECG formats, e.g., SCP-ECG to DICOM, HL7 aECG, MFER, and vice-versa [73][74][75][77][78][79]103,[110][111][112]. European data format (EDF) and MFER are intended to only store the raw signals.…”

“…Additionally, due to the limited computation power from the MCU, the moving average is less likely to interrupt continuous monitoring, which requires constant ADC operations and data analyses. In future work, we will explore other methods such as notch filter [23], Savitzky-Golay filter [24], or adapting the common-mode interference as reference signal [25] to find the best option in reducing the noise while preserving accurate ECG information under the hardware limitations.…”

“…Analog filters are made up of three basic elements-resistor (R), inductor (L) and capacitor (C)-and have fixed parameters [15,23]. The digital filters are designed based on the computing power of the central processing unit (CPU), so the parameters can be changed more flexibly [24]. To completely eliminate the two types of noise in the ECG signal, designing both low-pass (LP) and high-pass (HP) filters is necessary [25].…”

“…Along with advanced semiconductor technology, there have been many analog Front end (AFE) for ECG applications, produced by created manufacturers, serving biological measurement, such as TI, Maxim Integrated and Analog Devices, and the more compact and precise form of these components makes the design of wearable devices faster and easier [3,24,29,30]. The streamlined design process accelerates the commercial product launch process [24,31]. These bio-sensors usually have a variable sampling frequency [32].…”
