Advances in the FTU collective Thomson scattering system

Abstract: The new collective Thomson scattering diagnostic installed on the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade device started its first operations in 2014. The ongoing experiments investigate the presence of signals synchronous with rotating tearing mode islands, possibly due to parametric decay processes, and phenomena affecting electron cyclotron beam absorption or scattering measurements. The radiometric system, diagnostic layout, and data acquisition system were improved accordingly. The present status and near-term developme… Show more

“…The receiving antenna, consisting of a corrugated waveguide with square section and of proper length to allow using that as a Remote Steering (RS) antenna, has been built and mounted on the equatorial plane of FTU port 8, the same used for EC and CTS antennas. Details of the improvements can be found in [11].…”

“…New experiments were performed in 2016 at 4.7 T with two channels set to receive in parallel the two polarizations [6], both with frequency band enlarged to 4.2 GHz around the local oscillator frequency. In asymmetric configuration, emissions of another type described in [4] were observed and analyzed.…”

“…The presence of emissions due to parametric decay instabilities (PDI) during the injection of the ECH power at the 1 st Harmonic O-Mode has been investigated in the FTU Tokamak, using the renewed Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostic [1][2][3]. The aim was to add experimental evidences to confirm the hypotheses of low-threshold excitation of waves generated by PDI mechanisms based on the observation of back-scattered power in the case of 2 nd harmonic Xmode injection in TEXTOR [4 and reference therein], and on other observations in ASDEX-U [5].…”
