Advances in High-Precision Amplifiers—The Extra L Opposed Current Converter

Abstract: In existing half/full-bridge high-precision amplifiers, output distortion is present due to the required switch blanking time. The OCC topology does not require this blanking time but has a much higher total inductor volume compared to the half bridge. In this paper, a patented new topology is introduced that has the advantages of the OCC but with a much lower total inductor volume. The basic operation and properties of the ELOCC topology are explained including an extended optimization of the total inductor v… Show more

“…One of the disadvantages of the OCC topology is that the total inductor volume is increased due to the extra bias current to maintain the continuous current mode [8]. In [9], an extra bias inductor opposed current converter (ELOCC) is proposed to reduce the total inductor volume but the volume is not optimized yet.…”

“…A disadvantage of the DB is that it requires 2 filter inductors and thus more volume compared to conventional PWM converters. Studies show that the total volume can be reduced by coupling of the inductors [25], by changing the configuration of the inductors [26], or by altering the configuration of the switching legs [27]. However, the total inductor volume will remain larger than conventional PWM converters by at least factor 1.5.…”
