Advances in Egyptian Mediterranean Coast Climate Change Monitoring

Abstract: This paper characterizes non-indigenous fish species (NIS) and analyses both atmospheric and sea surface temperatures for the Mediterranean coast of Egypt from 1991 to 2020, in relation to previous reports in the same areas. Taxonomical characterization depicts 47 NIS from the Suez Canal (Lessepsian/alien) and 5 from the Atlantic provenance. GenBank accession number of the NIS mitochondrial gene, cytochrome oxidase 1, reproductive and commercial biodata, and a schematic Inkscape drawing for the most harmful Le… Show more

“…However, barcoding requires sophisticated laboratory instrumentation; it has a only small role in whole fish identification and limited use in other areas if not tied to taxonomic baseline data. In this sense, the availability of tools to identify images or morphological keys for non-experts (Table S1) would facilitate the classification and the possible direct marketing of products without adding further non-productive costs needed for barcoding [55].…”

“…Climate change and natural resource management are mutually interrelated [1,2]. Addressing these problems for economic purposes and specifically for human health requires knowledge of resources and estimation of their variability over time [3][4][5]. This study Water 2022, 14, 635 2 of 19 presents a specific perspective that bridges environmental, social, and economic gaps in an effort to allow for effective implementation of the sustainable development of coastal areas [6] by informing policies adopted in the Mediterranean for coastal area management [7,8].…”

“…Their value is that of providing ecosystem services that contribute to the well-being of the human population for many ecological, cultural, and medical uses [10]. Their stressors, as in lagoons around the world, include overexploitation [11], pollution [12][13][14], climate change, and biological invasions [5,[15][16][17][18], often co-occurring in time and space and having cumulative effects. Such ecosystem changes can have large consequences on species abundance, biodistributions, and ecosystem functioning and services [5,19,20].…”

“…Water pollution is a prevalent form of pollution that the planet is grappling with at the moment, and is considered one of the highest risk factors for sickness, disease and biodiversity loss [2][3][4][5]. According to global databases and statistics, heavy element contamination is among the most serious of the environmental concerns due to its very detrimental effects on environmental balance, human feeding, and species sustainability [6][7][8][9], especially under climate change conditions [10][11][12]. Wastewater can contain a wide variety of heavy metals, especially waste that has resulted mainly from industrialization, such as Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe, Zn and Hg [5,[13][14][15][16][17].…”
