Advances and potential of omics studies for understanding the development of food allergy

Abstract: The prevalence of food allergy continues to rise globally, carrying with it substantial safety, economic, and emotional burdens. Although preventative strategies do exist, the heterogeneity of allergy trajectories and clinical phenotypes has made it difficult to identify patients who would benefit from these strategies. Therefore, further studies investigating the molecular mechanisms that differentiate these trajectories are needed. Large-scale omics studies have identified key insights into the molecular mec… Show more

“…Furthermore, while the adaptive immunity underlying food allergies and therapeutic responses have been studied extensively, little is known about the immunometabolism (the interaction between immunity and metabolism) of the modification of tolerance to food allergens. [7][8][9] Metabolomics, defined as study of small molecule cellular substrates, intermediates and products of cellular metabolism, can be used to gauge the physiologic state of an organism and can reflect the interaction of the genome, transcriptome, proteome, microbiome, and environmental influences on disease. 10,11 Studies support the utility of metabolomic analyses in identifying pathways associated with food allergy, while several investigations have explored the evolution of metabolomic profiles on other types of aeroallergen sublingual and subcutaneous immunotherapy.…”

“…It offers a comprehensive view of the functional proteins present, which is crucial for understanding various biological processes. These methodologies permit the detection of food parasites [11], food authenticity investigation [12], food microorganism detection [13], recognition of food allergens [14], food processing analysis [15], by-product safety [16] and systems biology studies [17], among others [18]. Thus, these approaches are a beneficial proposal for food science findings, where agencies, investigation laboratories, food companies, and controlling institutions are merging efforts to obtain essential understandings about food safety.…”
