Advancements in Development of Chemical-Looping Combustion: A Review

Abstract: Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a novel combustion technology with inherent separation of greenhouse CO 2 . Extensive research has been performed on CLC in the last decade with respect to oxygen carrier development, reaction kinetics, reactor design, system efficiencies, and prototype testing. Transition metal oxides, such as Ni, Fe, Cu, and Mn oxides, were reported as reactive species in the oxygen carrier particles. Ni-based oxygen carriers exhibited the best reactivity and stability during multiredox c… Show more

“…In the same year, Hossain and de Lasa [99] reviewed the progress reached in the development of oxygen-carrier materials. Later, the applications of Chemical-Looping technologies for fossil energy conversion were briefly overviewed by Fan and Li [19], and Fang et al [52]. A deeper description of Chemical-Looping technologies has been done recently by Fan [20] and by Brandvoll [100].…”

“…One method of rating the gas conversion of carbonic combustion processes is through the CO 2 gas yield, see equation (3). A similar expression is used for the H 2 O yield of hydrogen combustion, see equation (4).…”

“…Chemical looping combustion (CLC) process has emerged as an attractive option to generate power with accomplishing the inherent CO 2 capture by the oxygen carrier which was carried out in the two interconnected reactors, an air reactor and a fuel reactor. During the operation in the CLC process, metal oxide (Me x O y ) as oxygen carrier provides the oxygen sources (oxygen capacity) for a combustion reaction, instead of air, thereby avoiding direct contact between fuel and air (Richter et al, 1983;Fang et al, 2009;Egmond and Hekkert, 2012). The fuels are converted to CO 2 /steam gases and produce high-grade heat to the steam engine for electricity generation (Ekstrom et al, 2008;Chiu and Ku, 2012).…”
