Advanced Properties of Urine Derived Stem Cells Compared to Adipose Tissue Derived Stem Cells in Terms of Cell Proliferation, Immune Modulation and Multi Differentiation

Abstract: Adipose tissue stem cells (ADSCs) would be an attractive autologous cell source. However, ADSCs require invasive procedures, and has potential complications. Recently, urine stem cells (USCs) have been proposed as an alternative stem cell source. In this study, we compared USCs and ADSCs collected from the same patients on stem cell characteristics and capacity to differentiate into various cell lineages to provide a useful guideline for selecting the appropriate type of cell source for use in clinical applica… Show more

“…Additionally, recent studies have indicated that the cells isolated from voided urine or urine catheterized from urinary tract have multi-lineage differentiation capability which are highly expandable and posses stem cell features. [1,2,[10][11][12][13] One of the most important results of the present study is that that human urine contains mesenchymal stem cells together with urothelial cells. This result is in compliance with the results other studies published in recent years.…”

“…These cells, originating from the parietal cells in kidney glomeruli , can be obtained using noninvasive, simple, safe, and low‐cost procedures, avoiding adverse events associated with current therapies. USCs can be easily isolated and expanded , which offers clear advantages over stem cells from other sources . After optimizing our methods, 100–140 USC clones/24 hours urine collection were consistently obtained from each individual .…”

“…They express strong positive markers as stem cells, but have a unique inhibition on immune cell activation compared to adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs); However, hUSCs showed lower osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation rate compared to ADSCs (Kang et al, 2015). Studies have demonstrated that hUSCs expressed urothelial markers after they were seeded onto a bacterial cellulose polymer (Bodin et al, 2010).…”
