The productivity of lentil is affected by a number of biotic and abiotic stresses of which Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lentis-Fol) is the most important yield-limiting factor (Bayaa et al., 1997;Mohammadi et al., 2012;Pouralibaba et al., 2016; Al-Husien et al., 2017). Fusarium wilt occurs during seedling and reproductive stages of the crop and can cause up to 100% yield losses under favorable conditions for disease development (Khare, 1981). Disease symptoms include stunting, wilting, marked reduction of root system, and internal vascular discoloration of the lower stem (Tosi and Cappelli, 2001). Management practices for disease control include long-term crop rotation with nonsusceptible hosts and removal and destruction of infected crop debris (Tosi and Cappelli, 2001). For many years, it was believed that no races/pathotypes are existing in the Fol population (Bayaa et al., 1997), but pathogenic and genetic variability of the pathogen has been reported from Algeria, India and Iran (Belabid and Fortas, 2002; Belabid et al., 2004). In 2016 Pouralibaba et al. (2016) developed a differential set with four lentil accessions and identified seven Fol pathotypes.Fusarium wilt in Bulgaria is caused by Fol and Fusarium gibbosum but Fol has predominant distribution (Stanoeva, 2007). Cultural and pathogenic characteristics of the pathogens, the effect of the year, genotype and inoculum dose on the disease incidence (DI), and the reaction of lentil accessions to the pathogen under field condition have been investigated but no resistant varieties and breeding lines were found (Stanoeva, 2007). Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) varieties resistant to Fusarium wilt (Fw) is a key issue in sustainable production systems. The effect of the plant density (PD) on screening lentil plants for resistance to Fw was studied for 4 yr. Single plants originating from 20 lentil varieties along with their seed composite were grown in a replicated‐21 honeycomb design under three PDs in a wilt‐sick plot. Plant densities were 3.2 plants m−2 (PDI), 12.8 plants m−2 (PDII), and 25.6 plants m−2 (PDIII). Ranking of lentil varieties was based on the percentage of dead wilted plants (%dwp). Two selection criteria, plant yield (PY) and plant yield potential (PYP), were applied for each PD within each year. Effectiveness of selection was determined as the number of the plants originating from the resistant varieties within the top 50 selected. The rate of dwp due to Fw increased as the PD decreased. The %dwp across years was 58, 45, and 18% for PDI, PDII, and PDIII, respectively. Significant changes were observed on the ranking and varietal description for Fw resistance among PDs. Effectiveness of selection was maximized under PDI, while application of the PYP indicated higher effectiveness values than PY, with a difference of 28% under PDI and 18% under PDII across years. It was concluded that screening under low PD is a valuable tool in identifying Fw‐resistant plants. Under this case, %dwp is an efficient and easy way to assess the resistance of elite lines, while application of the PYP criterion improves the effectiveness of the method when screening heterogeneous genetic material.

The genetic and phenotypic characterization of crops allows us to elucidate their evolutionary and domestication history, the genetic basis of important traits, and the use of variation present in landraces and wild relatives to enhance resilience. In this context, we aim to provide an overview of the main genetic resources developed for lentil and their main outcomes, and to suggest protocols for continued work on this important crop. Lens culinaris is the third-mostimportant cool-season grain and its use is increasing as a quick-cooking, nutritious, plant-based source of protein. L. culinaris was domesticated in the Fertile Crescent, and six additional wild taxa (L. orientalis, L. tomentosus, L. odemensis, L. lamottei, L. ervoides, and L. nigricans) are recognized. Numerous genetic diversity studies have shown that wild relatives present high levels of genetic variation and provide a reservoir of alleles that can be used for breeding programs. Furthermore, the integration of genetics/genomics and breeding techniques has resulted in identification of quantitative trait loci and genes related to attributes of interest. Genetic maps, massive genotyping, marker-assisted selection, and genomic selection are some of the genetic resources generated and applied in lentil. In addition, despite its size (∼4 Gbp) and complexity, the L. culinaris genome has been assembled, allowing a deeper understanding of its architecture. Still, major knowledge gaps exist in lentil, and a deeper understanding and characterization of germplasm resources, including wild relatives, is critical to lentil breeding and improvement.
