Advanced Flow-control Mechanisms for the Sockets Direct Protocol over InfiniBand

Abstract: The Sockets Direct Protocol (SDP) is an industry standard to allow existing TCP/IP applications to be executed on high-speed networks such as InfiniBand (IB). Like many other high-speed networks, IB requires the receiver process to inform the network interface card (NIC), before the data arrives, about buffers in which incoming data has to be placed. To ensure that the receiver process is ready to receive data, the sender process typically performs flow-control on the data transmission. Existing designs of SDP… Show more

“…We use a version of Booksim [47] modified to cycle-accurately simulate a fat tree topology with bandwidth steering and Infiniband-style lossless credit-based flow control [15]. We compare our "steered" fat tree against a vanilla fat tree.…”

“…This stack handles basic flow control and provides access to advanced hardware features, including RDMA, hardware flow control [2] and a hardware offloaded transport and network stack. Due to the RDMA features used by SDP, it can only operate over a reliable network, and so it utilizes the InfiniBand reliable connection mode for transmissions.…”

“…Wormhole routing [7,14,[19][20][21]25] is a popular routing strategy based on known fixed links. It is a subset of flow control methods called flit-buffer flow control [6,11,15,26]. Each message is transmitted as a contiguous sequence of flow control units.…”
