Advanced Ceramic Materials for Use in High-Temperature Particulate Removal Systems

Abstract: First-generation monolithic porous ceramic filter materials have experienced thermal fatigue, high-temperature creep, and a loss of material strength when operated for extended periods of time in advanced coal-fired combustion and gasification systems. Fiber-reinforced and advanced ceramic composites potentially provide a means to mitigate the degradation mechanisms encountered by monolithic filter matrices and ultimately extend operating life. In this paper we will review advancements which have recently been… Show more

“…Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the most preferable candidates for the fabrication of ceramic filters because of its high corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, and excellent mechanical strength [3,5,[7][8][9][10]. Ceramic filters made of silicon carbide can be manufactured by various methods, including slip casting [11,12], ramming [13], vacuum extrusion [13], melt infiltration [14], and so forth.…”

“…Silicon carbide (SiC) is especially useful for the fabrication of ceramic filters because of its high temperature stability, thermal shock resistance, high corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties (Alvin et al 1991;Alvin 1996;Pastila et al 2001;Li et al 2011). Ceramic filters for hot gas cleaning can be classified into fibrous ceramic filters and granular ceramic filters on the basis of their fabrication materials.…”

“…[1][2][3] Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic, which has high temperature stability, low thermal expansion coefficient, high corrosion resistance, high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties, is suitable material as porous ceramic supports for hot gas cleaning. [4][5][6][7][8] However, it is difficult to sinter pure SiC ceramics below 2100 • C due to its strong covalent nature. 9 One effective way of fabricating porous SiC ceramics at low temperatures is to add a small amount of bonding phases to bond SiC particles together.…”
