Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATLL): Report of Two Fully Documented Hellenic Patients

Abstract: ATLL is etiologically associated with HTLV-I retrovirus. A population of 10 to 20 million worldwide is estimated to be infected by the virus, but only 1-4% develop ATLL during a 70-year lifespan. The latency period is more than 30 years. The aim of this study was to report two cases of ATLL in Greek patients with the concomitant study of their family members. “…The tumour cells were immunoreactive for CD2, CD3, CD4, CD5 and CD25 and were non-immunoreactive for CD7 and CD8. 15,19 In the present case, based on the patient's clinical, laboratory and histopathological data, she is categorized as a chronic type of ATLL. Patients with papules and nodules had poorer prognosis than those with erythema.…”

“…11 Also, two cases of ATLL associated with HTLV-I have lately been detected in Greek patients. 12 In this study, we investigated the prevalence of HTLV-I/II infection in pregnant women and high-risk groups that included thalassemic patients, multitransfused patients and intravenous drug users from various regions of the Peloponnese peninsula, Greece in order to provide information for appropriate policies. We also tested one recipient of HTLV-I-infected blood and the relatives of a woman died from ATLL related to HTLV-I.…”
