“…There are several lines of evidence suggesting that the DH is involved in the regulation of depressive-like behaviors (Rodrıguez-Landa et al, 2009;Ho and Wang, 2010;Goeldner et al, 2010;Kim et al, 2012) and is an integral brain region for the action of antidepressants (Padovan and Guimaraes, 2004;Lu et al, 2006;McLaughlin et al, 2007;Liu et al, 2012). Several studies have found that blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and activation of cannabinoid CB1 receptors in the DH of rats induced an antidepressant-like effect as measured by the FST (Padovan and Guimaraes, 2004;McLaughlin et al, 2007).…”

“…In this model, LH animals lose weight, appear agitated, and have sleep disturbances, libido reduction, and associative-cognitive deficits (Henn and Vollmayr, 2005). It has been reported that rats displaying LH behavior have reduced cell proliferation, neurogenesis and synaptic transmission in the DH (Ho and Wang, 2010), and facilitation of 5-HT neurotransmission in this region prevents LH development in rats (Joca et al, 2003(Joca et al, , 2006. These findings indicate that the DH is involved LH behavior.…”

“…Researchers noticed a reduction in the number of progenitor cells and immature nerve cells in the hippocampus of rats treated with a diet low in Zn (Suh et al 2009). Further studies involving these animals showed that a deficiency of Zn led to the occurrence of DD symptoms (Ho & Wang 2010). Cellular biomolecule damage is one of the consequences of oxidative and nitrosative stress.…”

“…In a comprehensive review of subregion-specific regulation of hippocampal neurogenesis, Tanti and Belzung (2013) stated that most studies show homogenous effects of stress on hippocampal neurogenesis along the septo-temporal axis. Otherwise, several studies that used chronic unpredictable mild stress found ventral specificity of the changes in neurogenesis (Elizalde et al, 2010;Tanti et al, 2012), and only one study reported that dorsal hippocampal neurogenesis was selectively reduced by a learned helplessness paradigm, which is considered a powerful animal model of major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Ho and Wang, 2010). It can be speculated that the regional patterns of stress-induced decrease in neurogenesis may be related to the characteristics of stress.…”
