Adult mental health outcomes of adolescent depression: A systematic review

Abstract: This review shows that adolescent depression increases the risk for subsequent depression later in life. Articles consistently found that adolescent depression increases the risk for anxiety disorders in adulthood, but evidence was mixed on whether or not a significant association existed between adolescent depression and suicidality in adulthood. Early intervention in adolescent depression may reduce long-term burden of disease.

“…Body dissatisfaction has been associated with eating disorders e.g. bulimia and anorexia [6], and depressive symptoms have been associated with academic problems and failure, substance abuse, self-harming behaviors and suicide [7] and depression in adulthood [8]. Approximately 40% of adolescent females and 23% of adolescent males are dissatisfied with their bodies [9]; and the prevalence of major depressive episodes within the past year is 20.0% among adolescent females and 6.8% among adolescent males [10].…”

“…As many as 50% of adolescents self-report clinically significant symptoms of depression (Kessler et al, 2001), and an estimated 8-20% of individuals will have a major depressive disorder before the age of 18 (Johnson et al, 2018). While depression generally declines from the middle adolescence into adulthood (Ge et al, 2001), there is substantial heterogeneity in how depression develops between individuals (Costello et al, 2008;Dekker et al, 2007;Olino et al, 2010).…”

“…Three of five articles reported a link between adolescent depression and adult suicidality. 16 Of course, the potential of studies investigating the exposome goes well beyond psychiatry and neurology. The exposome could help analyse factors that contribute to, among many other chronic ailments, cancer, lung conditions and cardiovascular disease.…”
