Adult case of an omphalomesenteric cyst resected by laparoscopic-assisted surgery

Abstract: This report describes an extremely rare adult case of an omphalomesenteric cyst resected by laparoscopic-assisted surgery. A 29-years-old Japanese man was referred and admitted to Kyushu University Hospital because of an abdominal mass and an elevated serum CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) level (21.3 ng/mL) in August 2001. Abdominal CT and US demonstrated a cystic mass with septum and calcification. Laparoscopy showed a large mass to be attached to his abdominal wall, measuring 110 mm x 70 mm x 50 mm and filled… Show more

“…Other types of symptomatic persistent OMD require different approaches, such as open surgical excision or laparoscopic excision. [8,11,12] In conclusion, small bowel volvulus due to persistent OMD is a very rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. “…[11] The most common presentation of a persistent duct (67%) is the Meckel's diverticulum, found in approximately 2% of the population. [12] Other OMD remnants occur infrequently. Although they may be asymptomatic, common symptoms of OMD malformations include abdominal pain, intestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, infection of the cyst, umbilical drainage, and umbilical hernia, and all of these symptoms appear to be age-dependent, usually before the age of four years.…”

“…A 24-year-old male patient with abdominal pain was treated with a totally laparoscopic approach for a 20 x 45 x 75-mmsized omphalomesenteric cyst (1). A 29-year-old male with a 50 x 80 x 100-mm-sized omphalomesenteric cyst was treated laparoscopically, and the cyst was removed through a 5-cm abdominal incision (5). In our patient, the preoperative CT assessment revealed a cyst measuring 115 x 100 x 68 mm in size.…”
