Adsorptive removal of Pb2+ form aqueous solution by macrocyclic calix[4]naphthalene: kinetic, thermodynamic, and isotherm analysis

Abstract: Experimental results showed that the adsorption of Pb(2+) ions increased with the increase in solution pH and temperature. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models were used to describe the adsorption behavior of Pb(2+) by calix[4]naphthalene. Equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacity of calix[4]naphthalene for Pb(2+) at 30 °C was found to be 29.15 mg g(-1). Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption followed pseudo-second order model and the thermodyn… Show more

“…The pseudo first order kinetic model was used to treat the experimental data obtained by plotting log(qe-qt) vs. equilibration time ( log q e log C e obtained by plotting t/qt values against time t (Figure 7). The pseudo second order best describes the kinetics of the adsorption process and this agrees with other results reported in the literature [39,54]. The result obtained from the kinetic plot favors chemisorption mechanistic pathway rather than physisorption.…”

“…NaOH and de-ionized water showed desorption efficiencies of 18% and 2%, respectively. Desorption is beneficial for the separation and enrichment of lead(II) ion as well as the regeneration of the adsorbent [54].…”

“…The metal salts of Pb(NO 3 ) 2, Cd(NO 3 ) 2, Hg(NO 3 ) 2 and Cr(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O were purchased from E. Merck. The metal solutions with certain concentration were prepared by solubilizing the nitrate salts with deionized water.…”

“…Heavy metals were notoriously known due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation properties. In addition, several health damage were correlated to the heavy metal contamination [1][2][3][4] . Therefore, an effective treatment to remove the heavy metal ions from water or wastewater is highly required.…”

“…Again, Ahmad et al, (2013) used expensive resins and/or polymeric extractant of metals which is gradually giving way to the use of agricultural waste as low cost adsorbents. A promising and effective process in the removal of heavy metal pollutant is offered by biosorption.…”
