Adsorptive Removal of Formaldehyde from Air Using Mixed-Metal Oxides

Abstract: Volatile organic air pollutants such as aldehyde compounds have been identified as progressively damaging chemicals impacting human health at small albeit dangerous quantities. This study focuses on evaluating the dynamic adsorption of formaldehyde over binary mixed-metal oxides (MMOs) such as ZrO 2 /SiO 2 and TiO 2 /SiO 2 with different metal ratios. In addition, a metal−organic framework (MOF), namely, MIL-101(Cr), was synthesized and used as a base adsorbent to which the performance of MMOs was compared. Th… Show more

“…The MIL‐101 was synthesized according to a modified hydrothermal synthesis reported in our previous work, the γ‐alumina was synthesized according to a sol–gel procedure reported elsewhere, and the UVM‐7 silica that was synthesized following a modified procedure reported in our previous work . The materials were then functionalized with PEI ( M W = 800) using a conventional wet‐impregnation method.…”

“…To remove indoor HCHO, various methods have been developed by numerous scientists and engineers from different fields, such as physical adsorption, catalytic oxidation, chemical reactions, etc. Physical adsorption of HCHO by adsorbents is one of the most commonly used methods because it is user-friendly, economical, and efficient .…”

“…This strategy decreased formaldehyde emissions. Krishnamurthy et al [11] focused on evaluating the dynamic adsorption of formaldehyde over binary mixed metal oxides (MMOs) such as zirconium dioxide/silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide/silicon dioxide with different metal ratios. The zirconia-based composites displayed a comparatively higher a nity to formaldehyde as compared to their titania-based counterparts at very dilute concentrations.…”
