Adsorption of monoterpene alcohols at the water–air interface

Abstract: The measurements of the surface tension of aqueous solutions of 10 monoterpene alcohols, MAs: (−)-β-citronellol, geraniol, tetrahydrolinalool, linalool, (−)-menthol, (−)-terpinen-4-ol, p-cymene-8-ol, α-terpineol, isoborneol and (−)-borneol were made at T = 293 K. On the basis of the obtained results the values of the adsorption constant, the excluded area per molecule at the interface and the interaction parameter were determined by fitting the experimental data to various adsorption models. Next the adsorptio… Show more

“…In Ref. [18] the surface tension isotherms for linalool and citronellol aqueous solutions had been measured at 20 o C and processed using a long list of theoretical models. From our viewpoint, the most adequate results are obtained applying the van der Waals model, which is self-consistent with the kinetic curves reported in Sections 4 and 5.…”

“…This is in the range of values reported for the adsorption of different alcohols. 50,51 From a microkinetic point of view, a higher interaction energy of a reactant species increases the reaction rate initially due to high reactant coverage but lowers the rate by the ongoing production of the product species. This behavior leads to the broadened current response of the electrochemical reactions shown exemplarily for a proton- coupled electron-transfer step in Figure S7.…”

“…Surface tension has been assessed under equilibrium conditions as well as under nonequilibrium fastadsorbing regimes with different measuring methods, including a comparison with the earlier data. 20,21 Volatile amphiphiles demonstrate a fast-adsorbing behavior so that with dynamic tensiometry, the maximal bubble pressure method, it is possible to assess both dynamic interfacial activity and quasisteady-state adsorption behavior in a single measurement on a time scale from milliseconds to seconds.…”
