Adsorption of metal and metalloid ions onto nanoporous microparticles functionalized by atomic layer deposition

Abstract: A novel material was prepared by depositing ultrathin TiO 2 films on nanoporous micron-sized silica gel particles by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Silica gel particles were coated with 20 and 40 cycles of TiO 2 films by ALD. Half samples were heated at 500 ºC to change the crystal structure of TiO 2. Their adsorption ability for a mixture of 19 trace elements of heavy metals and other toxic elements, including As(

“…In the case of the removal of sulphate and chloride ions, the ion exchange mechanism between hydroxyl groups and pollutants should occur. Sulphates were removed better than chloride ions with both limestone that are in agreement with results from other studies [229,243]. According to results obtained during this research, it can be assumed that limestone has a better affinity for sulphate than chloride ions and can be used for alkaline water treatment with a high concentration of both anions.…”

“…Granulation is the process of fine powder particle enlargement to dust-free granules [242]. The granulation process can be divided into wet and dry granulation [242][243][244]. The main aim of the granulation process is to preserve the physico-chemical properties of the initial materials, such as porosity, surface area, and availability of functional groups.…”

“…4 , the XRD patterns of all samples show peaks appearing at 2 θ = 25.3°, 37.8°, 48.1°, 53.9°, 55.2°, 62.8° and 75.2°, corresponding to the diffraction patterns of (101), (004), (200), (105), (211), (204) and (215), respectively, of the pure tetragonal phase of anatase TiO 2 . 14 There was no significant difference in any sample. The TiO 2 in all samples retained the anatase structure after ZrO 2 ALD and no peak corresponded to reflections from ZrO 2 , which could be due to the low loading and amorphous structure of ZrO 2 on TiO 2 .…”

“…Fe single atoms were deposited on MWCNTs (US Nano Inc.), SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs, 20–30 nm, US Nano Inc.), and TiO 2 NPs (DT 51, 100% anatase, ∼80 m 2 /g, Crystal Inc.) by ALD using ferrocene and hydrogen (H 2 , 99.9%, Airgas) as precursors in a fluidized bed reactor, as schematically shown in Figure S1. The reactor is described in detail elsewhere. , All of the chemicals were used, as received, without any treatment. For a typical cycle, 5 g of substrate was loaded into the reactor.…”
