Adsorption of Hg(II) in an Aqueous Solution by Activated Carbon Prepared from Rice Husk Using KOH Activation

Abstract: With the development of industry, the discharge of wastewater containing mercury ions posed a serious threat to human health. Using biomass waste as an adsorbent to treat wastewater containing mercury ions was a better way due to its positive impacts on the environment and resource saving. In this research, activated carbon (AC) was prepared from rice husk (RH) by the KOH chemical activation method. The characterization results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET), Fourier transf… Show more

“…In literature reports, higher but inconsistent sorption capacities and removal efficiencies of mercury can be found, but sorption is mostly performed from modal solutions with significantly higher initial mercury concentrations [71,72]. Higher concentration usually leads to improved sorption capacity due to the greater driving force [73]. Furthermore, compared to modal solutions, obtained leachates comprise of various organic and inorganic mercury species, which significantly affect mercury uptake.…”

“…In fact, AC made from rice husk exhibits high effectiveness in the treatment of not only organic compounds, [11][12][13] but also heavy metals. 14,15 As mentioned above, oodwater is a suitable residence for microorganisms, particularly disease bacteria. In addition to the pollutants and organic substances, the ingredient of harmful microorganisms in oodwater is necessary for treatment.…”
