Adsorption of glyphosate in a forest soil: a study using Mössbauer and FT-IR spectroscopy

Abstract: Recebido em 28/5/09; aceito em 25/11/09; publicado na web em 23/3/10We studied the adsorption of glyphosate (GPS) onto soil mineral particles, using FT-IR and Mössbauer spectroscopy. From IR measurements for samples collected under native vegetation of a forest reserve, bands at 1632 and 1407 cm -1 could be attributed to the interaction between the carboxylic group of GPS and structural Al 3+ and Fe 3+ on the surface of mineral particles; bands at 1075 and 1000 cm -1 were observed only for cultivated soil. Mö… Show more

“…GLY sorption is favoured in acidic environments 63 , 67 , due to the protonated soil solution that promotes the formation of different GLY speciation forms with a positive net charge, facilitating the formation of GLY functional group complexes (R-NH, R-COOH and R-PO(OH)) with the metals present in those soils 68 , 69 . Previous studies 10 , 70 72 consider that amorphous metal oxides and hydroxides play a major role in GLY sorption.…”

“…Besides, the initial pH in range of 4 to 10, the final pH at around pHPZC value was determined. Glyphosate is a zwitterion with pKa values of for first phosphonic pKa2 = 2.2; for second phosphonic pKa3 = 5.4 and for amine pKa4 = 10.2 [30]. The pH-dependent of glyphosate was found decreasing when increasing pH.…”
