Wastewater treatment for the removal of heavy metals can reduce environmental contamination, enable safer industrial activities, and enhance sustainable practices. Efficient materials processing oriented to low temperature operating conditions; thus, the development and modeling of carbon nanotube/SDS-alumina nanocomposite-based adsorbents (CNT/ SDS-alumina) for efficient wastewater treatment are investigated in this work. The optimization of a low temperature-based process is targeted in this work to achieve a cost-effective method for fabrication of CNT/SDSalumina nanocomposites. The fabrication process involves the investigation of various heating conditions in an oven and autoclave with successful optimization for the formation of porous CNT/SDS-alumina nanocomposite-based adsorbents. The fabricated materials were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, FTIR, and surface area analysis. The results indicate that the heating condition is the factor controlling the formation of the porous structure of the CNT/SDS-alumina nanocomposite, which affects the wastewater treatment application. The surface area was higher (49.26−51.02 cm 2 /g) for CNT/SDS-alumina nanocomposite-based adsorbents prepared under autoclave heating conditions. The best adsorption capacity values obtained using the CNT/SDS-alumina nanocomposite prepared under autoclave conditions were 463 mg/g for arsenic ions and 418 mg/g for mercury ions, revealing the high efficiency of the prepared materials for the adsorption of pollutants. The adsorption process for the removal of arsenic and mercury is reported to follow the second-order kinetic model. The adsorption data for the CNT/SDS-alumina nanocomposite-based adsorbents prepared under autoclave heating conditions are well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm, suggesting a monolayer adsorption mechanism. Additionally, the prepared CNT/SDS-alumina nanocomposite-based adsorbents are recommended for potential applications involving the adsorption of various heavy metals for real wastewater treatment situations.

Insoluble chitosan complex as a potential adsorbent for aflatoxin B1 in poultry feed

As a class of secondary metabolites or toxins produced by fungi, aflatoxins can poison humans and animals; among them, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most dangerous one owing to its carcinogenic and mutagenic properties that increase risks for hepatocellular carcinoma in humans; hence, adsorbents such as smectites are commonly included in poultry feed to mitigate their effects. In this study, chitosan was crosslinked with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to form an insoluble polymer complex that is stable at the relevant physiological pH levels. The characterization via Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy revealed the interaction between the sulfate groups of the SDS and the amine group of chitosan (1,016 and 819 cm−1); this result was further confirmed by the X-ray diffraction patterns with a change in the crystalline structure of the chitosan-insoluble complex (2θ = 4.76°, 7°, and 22°). The morphology of the chitosan-insoluble complex obtained using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) revealed that particles were slightly porous. After characterization, the performance of the chemically modified polymer complex was evaluated as an adsorbent for AFB1 and compared with those of the unmodified chitosan, soluble chitosan complex, and commercial montmorillonite clay binder. In addition, the polymer complex was investigated as an adsorbent in an in vitro model for the poultry gastrointestinal system. Sequestration of AFB1 by a chemically modified polymer complex was 93.4%, equivalent to that of commercial montmorillonite clay (99.5%). However, these treatments also sequestered microminerals, particularly selenium and iron. This pH-stable, high-capacity adsorbent could be used in poultry feed to reduce the uptake of AFB1.

In this research work, a new type of absorbent material was obtained using kaolin which is produced by clay of the "Tsogt-Ovoo" deposit in Umnogovi province. The kaolin was produced by removing its mechanical impurities from clay and treating it to acid and heat treatment. When producing a chitosan based new absorbent bead, pure chitosan and mixtures of chitosan and kaolin (8:1, 8:2 and 8:3) with certain ratios were subjected to chemical processing. It was determined that the absorption capacity of chromium ion (Cr(VI)) was the highest when chitosan and kaolin mass ratio was 8:2. The adsorption activity of Cr(VI)in chitosan-based adsorbent was studied depending on the pH of the solution, time, temperature, initial concentration of chromium ion solution and mass of adsorbent material. The degree of absorption was the highest (80.25%) when initial concentration of thechromium ion solution is 50 mg/l, temperature is 250C, contact time is 3h and the mass of the adsorbent material is 0.1 g. It shows that this chitosan based adsorbent bead can be used for the separation of chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions.
