Adsorption of Congo red with hydrothermal treated shiitake mushroom

Abstract: The shiitake mushroom was treated by hydrothermal method to obtain a novel biosorbent. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method have been used to characterize the physico-chemical properties of the novel biosorbent. Factors affecting the adsorption properties of Congo red onto biosorbent such as pH, dose, time and temperature were investigated respectively. The experimental data more suitable for the langmuir model than the Freun… Show more

“…Additionally, all values of R L (dimensionless adsorption factor) and 1/n (Table 6) are less than unity, which confirms that the empirical conditions used in this adsorption were suitable [46]. Similar outcomes were reported for the adsorption of CR on the surface of some solid wastes [3] and hydrothermal-treated shiitake mushroom [1].…”

“…The dye of Congo red (CR) is known as typically anionic diazo dye having four different color-assisted functional groups [1], which has an IUPAC name of disodium 4amino-3-[4- [4-(1-amino-4-sulfonato-naphthalen-2-yl) diazenylphenyl] phenyl] diazenyl-naphthalene-1-sulfonate [2] and has various molecular structures in the aqueous solutions that differ in their pH [2]; it is highly soluble in water and stable in air and light [3]. CR dye is used in laboratories as a pH indicator, histological dye, amyloidosis diagnosis, and for testing the contents of HCl in gastric [3].…”

“…Furthermore, to show that the MO adsorption process into BHec-40 is benecial under the investigated conditions (30 °C), it can be determined based on the value of the equilibrium parameter (R L ) on the Langmuir isotherm. 59 In this study, the R L value was 0.0756, which means that the adsorption conditions of MO into BHec-40 were favorable. The meaning value of R L > 1 expresses unfavorable adsorption, while 0 < R L < 1 expresses favorable adsorption, R L = O expresses irreversible adsorption, and R L = 1 expresses linear adsorption.…”
