Adsorption of Bisphenol A from Aqueous Solution by HDTMA-Tunisian Clay Synthesized Under Microwave Irradiation: A Parametric and Thermodynamic Study

Abstract: Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting compound, is of concern because of its wide presence throughout the environment and its harmful effects. The present study aimed to prepare an eco-friendly, low-cost, and efficient adsorbent for removal of BPA from wastewater. A natural Tunisian clay was used as a raw material. First, the clay was purified and then modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) using microwave heating. The optimal conditions for clay modification were as follows: activation … Show more

“…All the R L values for BPA adsorption are between 0 and 1, where the range of R L values was ranged from 0.339 to 0.096. This confirms favorability adsorption process of BPA onto ZnO NPs (Issaoui et al, 2020). Also, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm equation was found to be 3.8 mg g -1 , these values were typically close to those published papers by other authors (Bhatnagar, A.Anastopoulos, 2017;Gomez-Serrano et al, 2021).…”

“…propane, 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol or 2, 2'-bis (4 hydroxyphenyl) propane, an organic compound with two phenolic moieties. Bisphenol A (BPA) is used widely, mainly as a monomer in the industrial production of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, and as a non-polymer additive to other plastics [3,4]. Because of their toxicity, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the European Food Safety Authority define the maximum acceptable amount of BPA as 0.05 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg body weight by day [5,6,7 ].…”

“…Bisphenol A has been detected in all kinds of environmental waters. The maximum concentrations reached up to 17.2 mg/L in hazardous waste landfill leachates, 12 μg/L in stream water and 0.1 μg/L in drinking water [8] Among the various methods developed to remove BPA from wastewaters [9,4], adsorption has significant advantages such as its efficiency, low operating cost, high selectivity, easy handling, etc. [10,4].…”
