Adsorption Characteristics of Pb(II) and Cr(III) onto C‐4‐Methoxyphenylcalix[4]Resorcinarene in Batch and Fixed Bed Column Systems

Abstract: A study on the adsorption characteristics of Pb(II) and Cr(III) cations onto C‐4‐methoxyphenylcalix‐[4]resorcinarene (CMPCR) in batch and fixed bed column systems has been conducted. CMPCR was produced by one step synthesis from resorcinol, 4‐methoxybenzaldehyde, and HCl. The synthesis was carried out at 78 °C for 24 hours and afforded the adsorbent in 85.7% as a 3:2 mixture of C4ν:C2ν isomer. Most parameters in batch and fixed bed column systems confirm that CMPCR is a good adsorbent for Pb(II) and Cr(III), t… Show more

“…The plots of the pseudo 2 nd order showed a good straight line (Figure 9) with a good R 2 value. This result was similar to the previous study of C-4-methoxyphenylcalix[4] resorcinarene (CMPCR) and C-methylcalix[4]resorcinarene (CMCR) as an adsorbent for Pb(II) and Cr(III), that also follow the Ho-MacKay pseudo 2 nd order model (Jumina et al 2011(Jumina et al , 2007. Trawneh et al (2015) also investigated the adsorption kinetics of C-4-hydroxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinarene against Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Pb(II) metal ions and the kinetic also follow the pseudo 2 nd order kinetic model.…”

“…A similar pattern was observed in the previous adsorption studies of CMPCR for Cr(III). In fact, the increase was almost verticle before reaching a steady value which took about 5 min (Jumina et al 2007). In the present work, the adsorption of Cd(II) reached equilibrium quite rapidly and became steady within 10 min.…”

“…The macrocyclic molecules of resorcinarenes are cyclic tetramers easily available via one-step reaction by acid-catalyzed condensation of resorcinol and various aldehydes [1][2][3][4][5]. Investigation by in vitro method, these compounds have been studied with regard to inclusion of cations [2,[6][7][8][9], anions [10][11], and organic neutral molecules [3-4,12,]. Recently, Henge-Napoli et al [13] proved that the Calix [4]arenas containing sulphonato group is an effective antidote on reducing the heavy metal concentration in vivo tests on mice.…”
