Nasopharyngeal cancer is a malignancy developing from the nasopharynx epithelium due to smoking and nitrosamine‐containing foods. Nasopharyngeal cancer is highly endemic to Southeast Asia. Eugenol and piperine have shown many anticancer activities on numerous cancer types, like colon, lung, liver, and breast cancer. In this study, we amalgamated eugenol and piperine loaded with a polyhydroxy butyrate/polyethylene glycol nanocomposite (Eu‐Pi/PHB‐PEG‐NC) for better anticancer results against nasopharyngeal cancer (C666‐1) cells. In the current study, nasopharyngeal cancer cell lines C666‐1 were utilized to appraise the cytotoxic potential of Eug‐Pip‐PEG‐NC on cell propagation, programmed cell death, and relocation. Eu‐Pi/PHB‐PEG‐NC inhibits cellular proliferation on C666‐1 cells in a dose‐dependent manner, and when compared with 20 µg/ml, 15 µg/ml of loaded mixture evidently restrained the passage aptitude of C666‐1 cells, this was attended with a downregulated expression of mitochondrial membrane potential. Treatment with 15 µg/ml Eu‐Pi/PHB‐PEG‐NC suggestively amplified cell apoptosis in the C666‐1 cells. Furthermore, its cleaved caspase‐3, 8, and 9 and Bax gene expression was augmented and Bcl‐2 gene expression was diminished after Eu‐Pi/PHB‐PEG‐NC treatment. Additionally, our data established that the collective effect of Eu‐Pi/PHB‐PEG‐NC loaded micelles inhibited the expansion of C666‐1 cells augmented apoptosis connected with the intrusion of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.

Chitin and chitosan are biopolymers that are frequently found in nature and have a broad range of applications in the food, biomedical and industrial sectors, due to their high biological activity. The primary source of chitin and chitosan is shellfish, however, shortages in the supply chain, seasonality issues in their availability, as well as ecological degradation are only a few of the problems with the main chitin resources. Due to the broad spectrum of applications for which chitin can be used, the demand for chitin and its derivatives is increasing. Therefore, the market is looking for widely available, greener alternatives to the main commercial chitin sources. Insects appear as a suitable candidate to fill this gap. During insect rearing and processing, a number of side streams are generated, e.g., exuviae of larvae and pupae, dead adults, etc. which are currently mostly discarded as waste. However, these side streams could constitute a novel and long-term supply of chitin for industrial applications. Recent research has demonstrated the suitability of several edible insect species for the production of chitin and chitosan, wherein the exoskeleton of the black soldier fly and field cricket are rich in chitin, making them a good source for chitin and chitosan extraction and purification among other farmed insect candidates. Moreover, several potential uses have been identified for insect-derived chitin and chitosan. Thus, this review aims to present recent advances in the production of chitin and chitosan from edible insects, specifically on their extraction and purification, as well as on their applications for agriculture, food and nutrition, biomedicine and bioplastic production.

In this study, nano‐formulation has been used to tackle one of the most important environmental problems which can be considered a major threat to human health. We prepared some eco‐friendly nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) as delivery agents to properly deliver an antibacterial agent (eugenol) into hospital wastewater in order to control bacterial growth. Eugenol‐loaded nanostructured lipid carriers were prepared by hot high‐speed homogenization. Then, the prepared nanocarriers were characterized using different techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and dynamic scanning calorimetry. The turbidity assay and colony counting method were used to determine the ability of the prepared eugenol‐loaded nanostructured lipid carriers to inhibit bacterial growth rate in the culture media and hospital wastewater, respectively. The mean size and zeta potential of NLC‐eugenol were 78.12 ± 6.1 nm and −29.43 ± 2.21 mV, respectively. The results showed that the highest inhibitory effect of NLC‐eugenol in culture media was seen in standard and wild Staphylococcus aureus strains (43.42% and 26.41%, respectively) with a concentration of 0.125 μM. The antibacterial activity of NLC‐eugenol in sterile wastewater on wild strains of bacteria showed that the most effective concentration to reduce bacterial amounts was 0.125 μM on wild S. aureus and Enterococcus faecalis strains (38% and 33.47%, respectively) at 37°C. The NLC‐eugenol with a concentration of 0.125 μM showed the greatest effect of reducing total microbial agents by 28.66% in hospital wastewater at 25°C. The highest antibacterial effect achieved using the 0.125 μM concentration is due to the egel phenomenon. Also, the mechanism of action of NLC‐eugenol is cell wall destruction and eventually cell death. The results showed that NLC‐eugenol with a concentration of 0.125 μM can reduce wild bacterial strains in sterilized wastewater and hospital wastewater, which can prove the great potential of the prepared eugenol‐loaded nanostructured lipid carriers to control bacterial growth. Practitioner Points NLC is one of the safest biodegradable and environmentally friendly carriers, which is nontoxic for humans and the environment. Eugenol is a natural compound, which makes it less toxic for the environment while being toxic for bacteria. Therefore, our method has the least side effect in comparison with existing methods for wastewater treatment. The gradual release of eugenol from NLC nanoparticles can effectively control the pathogenic factors of wastewater.
