Adsorption by Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Hg(II) from Aqueous Solutions Using the 2-Butyl-imidazolium Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phosphate as Ionic Liquid

Abstract: In this work, a novel room temperature ionic liquid (2-butyl-imidazolium di- (2-ethylhexyl) [HgClOH] org species were formed where (H 2 R 2 ) was D2EHPA. In the case of ionic strength, the results showed that the addition of sodium acetate at 0.302 mmol·L −1 to the aqueous phase strongly increased the mercury extraction yield (R = 100%). The extracted species were investigated by a calculation program using CHEAQS V. L20.1 in order to determine the relation between the percentages of the extracted species an… Show more

“…In the past decade, ionic liquids with imidazolium cations have been investigated extensively and have proven to show superior performance in extracting organic compounds and heavy metals from aqueous solutions using liquid-liquid extraction [4][5][6][7][8][9]. However, it is worth noting that imidazolium based ionic liquids, especially with hydrophobic characteristic are normally costly.…”

“…3 The World Health Organization recommends a limit of 1 μg l − 1 of mercury in drinking water, 4 which requires a highly accurate, selective and sensitive method of measurement. Common methods used for mercury extraction from water samples include liquid-liquid extraction, 5,6 solid-liquid extraction, 7 flotation 8 and membrane filtration. 9 The immobilization of organic ligands on the surface of an inorganic or organic solid support is usually achieved by modifying the surface with certain target functional groups that can enhance the affinity towards metal ions.…”

“…The synthesis of ILs was performed using published procedure [32]. Aliquat 336 chloride (8.083 g, 20 mM) was converted to the thiocyanate and hydrogenophosphate forms by mixing with an aqueous solution of NH 4 SCN (1.520 g, 20 mM) and NaH 2 PO 4 (3.120 g, 20 mM) at an A/O volume ratio of unity for 2 h at room temperature (20˚C ± 1˚C).…”
