“…Our data demonstrate the presence of α 1D ‐adrenoceptors in the vasculature of young, pre‐hypertensive SHR rats and its age‐related appearance in adult WKY rats; a similar result has been observed with the ageing of the normotensive rat ( Ibarra et al ., 1997 ). The abundance of this receptor occurring in aorta follows this order SHR>WKY >>Wistar at mRNA, receptor number and functional levels ( Stassen et al ., 1997 ; Xu et al ., 1998 ; Ibarra et al ., 1998 ). The presence of α 1D ‐adrenoceptors in the resistance vasculature of pre‐hypertensive and hypertensive rats, may indicate that this receptor is involved in the pathogenesis/maintenance of high blood pressure in SHR.…”

“…Because of the use of intact arteries in the myograph, we decided to perform the analysis of [ 125 I]CGRP binding in comparable arterial segments [14]. The arteries were obtained from pregnant (n = 4) and nonpregnant (n = 3) rats.…”

“…Analysis of specific binding of α 1 -adrenoceptors in the presence of 0.3 nmol l –1 [ 3 H]-prazosin in injured left carotid arteries and uninjured right carotid control arteries was performed essentially as described by Stassen et al [22]. Segments (5–10 mm long) of carotid artery were incubated for 60 min at 37°C in 250 µl 50 m M Tris-HCl, 5 m M MgCl 2 (pH 7.4) (incubation buffer) containing 0.3 nmol l –1 [ 3 H]-prazosin.…”
