Adrenergic factors influencing the mitotic rate in stratified squamous epithelium of the buccal mucosa of the rat

Abstract: 1. An in vivo stathmokinetic technique was used to determine the immediate effect of various adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists on the mitotic rate in the stratified squamous epithelium of the rat buccal mucosa. 2. The mitotic rate increased significantly in rats treated with propranolol and with practolol, whereas the mitotic rate decreased significantly in rats treated with metaraminol. In animals treated with isoprenaline and phentolamine the mitotic rate did not differ significantly from the control val… Show more

“…This is a substantial number, as it translates to 28,595 new HBV infections each year. A publication by the US Center for Disease Control[30] and a study in Nigeria [31] implicated injection from untrained community medical providers, body scarification, sharing of sharp body-piercing instruments, sharing of toothbrushes, and uvulectomy as reasons for the spread of HBV [16]. A relatively high prevalence was demonstrated in a group of Nigerian female civil servants, a finding thought to be related to female circumcision.…”

“…Values are available for labelling and mitotic indices of mucosal epithelia of a range of species and anatomical sites. A marked diurnal variation in mitotic activity exists in oral mucosae (Izquierdo & Gibbs 1972;Mackenzie & Hill 1981), and normal activity is altered by a range of factors including stress, a factor of importance when human tissues are collected (BuUough 1967, Skougaard 1970), aand P-adrenergic compounds (Hunt & Tutton 1976), possibly age , and inflammation and trauma (Mackenzie & Miles 1973, Hopps & Johnson 1974.…”
