Adrenal Cysts in the Newborn

Abstract: We report on 2 newborns with adrenal cysts who were treated successfully with an operation. One patient had been well after birth with no adrenal insufficiency. However, 2 large and 2 small cysts were found, all of which were attached to the adrenal gland without a clear vascular stalk. The other patient had adrenal cortical insufficiency. His mother had had gestational diabetes and hypertension during pregnancy. The adrenal cyst was partially resected. Both patients were in good condition 5 years postoperativ… Show more

“…In addition, they have also been reported to occur in children as a result of injury or infarction in the neonatal period. 8 Calcification is seen in 15% of the cysts, and this has been determined not to indicate malignancy. 6 In our series of patients, none of the cases of adrenal cyst had calcifications or parasitic cysts.…”

“…Adrenal pseudocysts are generally thought to arise from hemorrhage within an adrenal gland that has been subjected to severe stress, trauma, and surgery [5,7,8,9,10]. All age groups are affected, from the newborn to the eighth decade [6,11]. Adrenal pseudocysts may be found incidentally during surgery or imaging examinations, when they are small and asymptomatic [6,7,11,12,13].…”

“…Die Wandung weist histologisch kein Epithel oder Endothel auf, sondern besteht lediglich aus Bindegewebe und geht ohne scharfe Grenze in das Nebennierenparenchym über. Pseudozysten werden oft sehr groß (8) und treten auch bei Kindern auf (11,16). Endotheliale Zysten werden intra vitam seltener diagnostiziert.…”
