Imaging spectrum of adrenal pseudocysts on CT

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the imaging spectrum of adrenal pseudocysts on CT. The CT images of seven patients with pathologic diagnosis of adrenal pseudocysts in our hospital were reviewed for the size, cystic part, solid part, septum, calcification, acute hematoma, and layering appearance. The presence or absence of contrast enhancement of solid parts in each lesion was also assessed if possible. Of the seven adrenal pseudocysts, there were three pure cystic, three mixed cystic and solid, and one so… Show more

“…1 Endothelial cysts are the most commonly occurring followed by pseudocysts. 4 Adrenal pseudocysts are benign, nonfunctional masses arising from the cortex or medulla of the adrenal gland. Symptoms are caused by mass effect, infection, rupture or haemorrhage.…”

“…Classically, adrenal pseudocysts are described as cystic lesions (of homogenous water density) with a fibrous wall and thin internal septations. 1,4 Mural/septal calcification is commonly demonstrated due to haemorrhage, 1 this is discernible from central/amorphous calcification seen in malignant disease. As in this case, pseudocysts can contain solid components or layering secondary to haemorrhage.…”

“…Adrenal cysts are often discovered incidentally, and the reported incidence is increasing due to increased detection rates from more liberal use of imaging in the present era [1]. The incidence is reported as 0.064% in surgical series and 0.18% on autopsies [2].…”

“…Calcifications may be seen in adrenal cysts, as in our case. In addition, the lack of enhancement of solid elements of a mass may help in the differential diagnosis of pseudocyst versus adrenal neoplasm [12]. Other modalities that have been used to evaluate cysts include ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).…”
