George and McDuffie (2007) have listed the reasons accepted for the observed obesity epidemic in adolescents as increased television and computer games, the fast-food restaurant boom, media campaigns, increased sugary and fat-laden foods (strategically placed in supermarkets and advertised), schools offering junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages while scaling back physical education classes and recess, working parents having less time to cook or time to supervise/participate in play outdoors, exodus of grocery stores from urban centres (reducing access to affordable fresh fruit and vegetables) and suburban sprawl and crime reducing children's time outdoors. These reasons can be grouped into three broad categories: nature deficit, altered foodscape and community/family connectedness.…”
