School performance was assessed using the final grade in Portuguese and mathematics. The evaluation of adolescents, families and teachers shows that attention problems explain low school performance, in addition to the externalization of problems indicated by the adolescents and the isolation or depression indicated by the teachers. The article highlights the importance of attention to these variables, given their influence on adolescents' learning.Keywords: behavior disorders, educational attainment level, adolescence. Contribución de los Indicadores de Problemas Emocionales y de Comportamiento al Rendimiento EscolarResumen Este estudio investiga en qué medida los indicadores de problemas emocionales y conductuales contribuyen y explican el rendimiento académico de los adolescentes. En la investigación participaron 70 estudiantes, 70 familias y 21 maestros, que respondieron el Autoinforme para jóvenes (ysr, por sus siglas en inglés), el Inventario de conductas de niños y adolescentes (cbcl, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Informe del educador (trf, por sus siglas en inglés). El rendimiento escolar se evaluó a partir de la media final en las disciplinas de portugués y matemáticas. En la evaluación de los adolescentes, sus familias y los maestros se destaca que los problemas de atención explican el bajo rendimiento escolar, además de la externalización de los problemas indicados por los adolescentes y los síntomas de aislamiento o depresión señalados por los profesores. Se resalta la importancia de prestar atención a este tipo de indicadores, dada su influencia sobre el aprendizaje de los adolescentes.Palabras clave: trastornos de la conducta, rendimiento escolar, adolescencia.

Background: Smoking among adolescents has been linked to a variety of adverse and long term health consequences. "Susceptibility to smoking" or the lack of cognitive commitment to abstain from smoking is an important predictor of adolescent smoking. In 2008, we conducted a study to determine the psycho-sociological factors associated with susceptibility to smoking among secondary school students in the district of Kota Tinggi, Johor. Materials and Methods: Two thousand seven hundred students were randomly selected by proportional stratified sampling. Analyses on 1,736 non-smoking students revealed that prevalence of adolescents susceptible to smoking was 16.3%. Results: Male gender (aOR=2.05, 95%CI= 1.23-3.39), poor academic achievement (aOR 1.60, 95%CI 1.05-2.44), ever-smoker (aOR 2.17, 95%CI 1.37-3.44) and having a smoking friend (aOR 1.76, 95%CI 1.10-2.83) were associated with susceptibility to smoking, while having the perception that smoking prohibition in school was strictly enforced (aOR 0.55, 95%CI 0.32-0.94), and had never seen friends smoking in a school compound (aOR 0.59, 95%CI 0.37-0.96) were considered protective factors Conclusions: These results indicate that follow-up programmes need to capitalise on the modifiable factors related to susceptibility to smoking by getting all stakeholders to be actively involved to stamp out smoking initiation among adolescents.

This dissertation is based on results from an intervention study targeting working memory training. A group of 46 boys and 11 girls (aged 10.7) that were attending special units in 16 regular schools participated in the study. The treatment group (n = 42) trained at school every day for 30-40 minutes with an interactive computer program (Cogmed training) for five weeks. The performances of the treatment group on reading related measures and basic number skills are compared to those of a group of students (n =15) that were attending similar special units and received only ordinary special educational instruction. Working memory measures and non-verbal problem solving were compared to students (n = 25) in a control group from a previous study.In Study I, it was found that reading comprehension and working memory measures correlated and improved at post-tests (T2, T3) for the treatment group to a larger extent than for the comparison group.In Study II, it was found that working memory measures and basic number skills were highly related. The performance of the boys in the treatment group improved more than that of the boys in the comparison group on basic number test at both post-tests.In Study III, basic skills assessed three years later (T4) are reported. The treatment group achieved higher scores in reading comprehension compared to pre-tests and compared to the control group.The treatment group seems to have gained from the cognitive training of working memory with the computer assisted program directly after training, after seven months and at the three year follow-up. The gains were observed on visuo-spatial working memory measure (T2, T3), reading comprehension and on basic number skills in boys (T2, T3, T4).The possible mechanisms that may be involved in and may explain the observed improvements of performances are discussed: executive function, attention, memory, motivation, emotions. The study has some methodological limitations and more research is needed to substantiate the efficacy of the program.
