Microbial resistance has progressed rapidly and is becoming the leading cause of death globally. The spread of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms has been a significant threat to the successful therapy against microbial infections. Scientists have become more concerned about the possibility of a return to the pre-antibiotic era. Thus, searching for alternatives to fight microorganisms has become a necessity. Some bacteria are naturally resistant to antibiotics, while others acquire resistance mainly by the misuse of antibiotics and the emergence of new resistant variants through mutation. Since ancient times, plants represent the leading source of drugs and alternative medicine for fighting against diseases. Plants are rich sources of valuable secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, quinones, tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Many studies focus on plant secondary metabolites as a potential source for antibiotic discovery. They have the required structural properties and can act by different mechanisms. This review analyses the antibiotic resistance strategies produced by multidrug-resistant bacteria and explores the phytochemicals from different classes with documented antimicrobial action against resistant bacteria, either alone or in combination with traditional antibiotics.

Schwannomas are benign, encapsulated, slow-growing, tumours deriving from the peri neural cells located in the nerve sheath. They can arise from any cranial, peripheral or autonomic nerves, and show a predilection for the head and neck region. They may produce secondary symptoms like nasal obstruction, dysphagia, and hoarseness of voice depending upon the location of the tumour. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult, relying on clinical suspicion, and confirmed by surgical pathology. Preoperative imaging or fine needle aspiration cytology may help to reveal diagnosis. The definitive diagnosis is made by histopathological examinations. A 28 years old female patient presented to the OPD with painless swelling on the left lateral side of the neck since 1 year. The swelling was mobile, non-tender, non-pulsatile firm in consistency measuring 4×3 cm with no bruit. MRI neck with contrast was done which revealed a moderately enhancing lesion of size 7×4×3 cm in the left carotid sheath. The tumour was approached by an anterior approach along the medial border of the sternocleidomastoid. Platysma and fascia were dissected followed by carotid sheath to reach the tumour. As the mass was seen arising from a branch of the ansa cervicalis, it had to be sacrificed.

Adolescents and young adult comprise a significant proportion of India’s population. Although, this group of the population faces serious challenges to their health and well-being. To promote their health and well-being, Centre of Excellence (CoE) at King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, India, serves as an advanced care facility for 10–24-year-old adolescents and young adult women. This paper reports the socio-demographic characteristics of, and health services availed to adolescents and young adults who are visiting the CoE in Lucknow, India. A total of 6038 beneficiaries received clinical services during June 2018–March 2022. Out of total clinical services, 38.37% counselling and 37.53% referral services were utilised. Menstruation (46.29%), sexual and reproductive (28.19%), nutrition (5.91%), and mental health (1.67%) related problems were highly reported. The age of beneficiaries is classified into three categories, i.e., 10–14, 15–19, and 20–24 years. Prevalence of overweight was highest among adolescents aged 20–24 years compared to other age groups. Other than nutrition, late-adolescent girls (15–19) faced more health problems than their counterparts. The percentage of beneficiaries decreased significantly during and post the COVID-19 period (<0.001). Therefore, age-specific programs are currently needed, and interventions need to be designed accordingly.
