The state of the art of earthen architecture and vernacular built heritage comprises a complex set of issues that range from fundamental problematic recognition to anthropological and cultural studies and, more recently, to technological and experimental analyses. This paper addresses the development of the field, following the milestones of the international literature and pursuing a reflective-theory approach within a historical framework. It aims to explore the main contributions that have enhanced vernacular heritage and earthen architecture as specific domains, from pioneering public awareness essays to institutional expertise guidelines. Finally, in addition to the literature review process, this paper considers the recent corpus of recommendations from conservation management reference institutions, the updating of the operative problematic of earthen vernacular built heritage, and the relevance of local community involvement in facing increasing challenges.

Seismic strengthening of existing adobe masonry (AM) buildings has been recognized as a critical issue due to the dramatic consequences of recent seismic events occurred especially in developing countries, where a great part of the population lives in those constructions. Previous studies investigated the effectiveness of different retrofitting techniques by means of experimental programs consisting of either dynamic or static tests on reduced-or full-scale specimens, representing partial or complete AM dwellings. In this study, the output of diagonal compression tests on adobe masonry panels before and after external strengthening are presented. Three series of specimens were tested, namely, unreinforced and strengthened wallets with textile reinforced matrix (TRM) systems made of either hemp or glass meshes. Those tests benefitted from the characterization of the mud mortar that was used for both masonry joints and matrix, representing typical characteristics of existing Italian AM buildings. Main testing outcomes obtained for the AM wallets, particularly in terms of observed damage and response curves, are presented and discussed. In the end, the effectiveness of the applied TRM systems in the improvement of shear strength and ductility capacity is assessed.

<p>Hakka Tulous are massive circular earth constructions of the Fujian Province, China, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. They are subjected to earthquakes of medium magnitude, but their response to the seismic action is not yet investigated in depth. The seismic response of Fujian Tulous was herein investigated through pushover analysis modelling the Tulou structure by finite elements. Although the Tulou is a big construction with a circular earth wall of about fifty meters in diameter, a micromechanical approach was used to model the earth nonlinear behaviour. Even if no binder is added to the earthen material, the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model can be adopted and has shown to be effective in modelling its nonlinear behaviour, as well as the nonlinear response of the Tulou earth wall. Performing pushover analysis of a big earth structure using a micromechanical approach seems to give reliable results, that must be proved by future research.</p>
