The social, political, cultural and economic dimensions of toponymy are expressed in the act of naming, that is, in the contradictory production of toponyms. The place naming is thus an object of toponymy distinct from the place name itself. Its study from the point of view of motivations and representations has been developed in the social sciences, and in particular in cultural and political geography. The study of the naming of places presupposes the observation and documentation of the process, and therefore focuses on neotoponymy. Such neotoponymy is both the study of new place names and the corpus formed by them. In addition to collections of names whose meaning and origin can be worked on, it offers, by definition, information on its mode of production, its actors and on possible controversies or debates related to it. Neotoponymy is the result of a process of substitution or addition (renaming, plurinaming) or of nominations of emerging places. Depending on the context, the type of places and the motivations linked to it, issues and techniques will be different. The contemporary history of France since the Revolution offers an abundance of neotoponymies from successive or simultaneous contexts that will allow us to test a theoretical framework on place naming.

Au Maroc, les tribunaux demeurent le Saint Graal des militants amazighs qui souhaitent la légitimation institutionnelle du tamazight (langue berbère ou langue amazighe) et cherchent à mettre fin aux discriminations linguistiques et à la domination arabe dans les administrations. Les pratiques juridiques en langue vernaculaire tamazight ne sont régies par aucune politique étatique officielle, et c’est plutôt la langue arabe qui domine les affaires judiciaires. Pourtant, comme je le soutiens dans le présent article, l’ « État » emploie des individus, en particulier des juges et des officiers d’état civil, dont certains utilisent des variétés régionales de tamazight dans le cadre de leur travail, notamment pour enregistrer les mariages dans le cadre de tribunaux coutumiers ambulants, procédures qui ont fait l’objet de mes enquêtes sur le terrain et d’entrevues. Les pratiques et les idéologies langagières des juges méritent l’attention de quiconque souhaite étudier l’économie de la langue dans la politique marocaine, notamment en raison du statut élevé de ces représentants de l’État et du respect dont ils sont auréolés. Le personnel juridique obéit aux nécessités politiques en fonction de contraintes et de possibilités locales – notamment linguistiques – et, ce faisant, contribue à modeler l’ensemble des choix politiques en matière de langue au Maroc.The courts have remained the Holy Grail for Amazigh activists in Morocco who seek institutionalized legitimacy for Tamazight (« Berber ») and an end to language discrimination and Arabic dominance in administrations. There is no official state policy for handling legal affairs in the indigenous Tamazight language ; Arabic instead dominates legal matters. Yet as I argue in this article, the « state » is comprised of individual civil servants, including judges and clerks, many of whom do use regional Tamazight varieties in the course of their work, including the task of registering customary marriages through mobile courthouses, which I examine here as the result of fieldwork and interviews. Judges’ language practices and ideologies merit our attention in any assessment of the political economy of language in Morocco, particularly given the high status and respect granted to these state representatives. Most literature on Amazigh (Berber) in Morocco and in the Journal of North African Studies revolve around historical, social and political issues. Literature also covers issues of Berber cultural recognition, linguistic identity, and colonization. However, little is known of the ethnobotanical knowledge associated with the traditional way of life that maintains the livelihood and health of Berber communities in isolated regions of the High Atlas. In this paper, we aim to identify whether ethnobotanical knowledge is eroding and whether geographical isolation shapes its transmission in the context of globalization. This paper focuses on the differences between men's and women's medicinal plant knowledge. We conducted ethnographic and ethnobotanical fieldwork over 33 months interviewing 51 men and 146 women in ten villages with different degrees of access to urban areas and modern commodities and services. We used and analyzed quantitative data drawn from plants' free listing to assess whether ethnobotanical knowledge is eroding. Our results show that gendered differences in ethnobotanical knowledge are concomitant of integration to market economies, revealing significant knowledge retention differences in the most isolated study sites. We conclude that despite strong forces at work to integrate remote communities into globalized markets, there are important risks to TEK which supports local environmental and community health.
