Adjustment in Parents of Children Undergoing Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract: Background Pediatric stem cell transplant (SCT) is a demanding procedure for children and parents. Interventions to promote positive adjustment of parents in this setting are needed. Method 171 patient/parent dyads from 4 sites received one of 3 interventions to reduce SCT-related distress: a child intervention with massage and humor therapy, an identical child intervention plus a parent intervention with massage and relaxation/imagery, or standard care. “…This is in line with recent qualitative research conducted with fathers of youth with chronic pain 12 . Optimism and benefit finding as resilience-based factors have been hypothesized to be protective leading to better coping with chronic pain 13 and other pediatric chronic illnesses 38 . In addition to constructs such as parent acceptance and psychological flexibility, optimism and benefit finding warrant further consideration in pediatric pain research.…”

“…To date, most of the psychological interventions developed have focused on caregivers of children with cancer (Mullins et al, 2012; Sahler et al, 2013). There has been one randomized clinical trial (Lindwall et al, 2014), which evaluated the efficacy of a child and parent massage and humor therapy intervention. Parents were randomly assigned to receive a child-targeted massage and humor therapy intervention; the child intervention, a parent-targeted massage, and humor therapy intervention; or standard care.…”

“…Traumatic distress was included as a primary outcome due to the prevalence of traumatic stress responses in this population (see Packman et al, 2010, for a review of this topic). Positive well-being was evaluated as a secondary outcome because positive outcomes are an important component of the caregiving experience and behavioral interventions for parent caregivers have assessed positive well-being as an indicator of treatment response (Lindwall et al, 2014) Because P-SCIP targeted coping skills that to be used to manage stressors experienced during the year after HSCT, we proposed that the beneficial effects of P-SCIP would have a persistent effect over the one year post-HSCT that caregivers were evaluated.…”

“…Depression and anxiety have been previously observed in mothers of children undergoing HSCT. 3,7,8,47,48 In one study, 15% of mothers (N=115) had moderate to severe depression based on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and 18% of mothers had moderate to severe anxiety based on the Beck Anxiety Inventory.…”
