Adiposity, depression and anxiety: interrelationship and possible mediators

Abstract: OBJECTIVES To explore the association between adiposity, major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, and to assess the role of inflammation, diet quality and physical activity in this association.METHODS We used data from 2,977 individuals from the 1993 Pelotas Cohort (Brazil) who attended the 18- and 22-year follow-ups. We assessed general obesity using body mass index, fat mass index, and abdominal obesity using waist circumference. Major Depressive Disorder and generalized anxiety disorder w… Show more

“…In this sense, it is interesting to point out that physical exercise can induce molecular modifications which swerve a chronic pro-inflammatory state (which is present both in obesity and depression) to anti-inflammatory one [ 35 ]. So, physical training in obese women does not only cause a reduction of BMI with an amelioration of global health state [ 36 , 37 ], but it is also efficacious in treating mild to moderate depression [ 38 ], inducing increased levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines and of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Gamma Coactivator Alpha (PGC1α), which reduces the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines [ 35 ].…”

“…Numerous factors could elucidate the relationship between obesity and anxiety [ 83 , 84 ], one of which is immune-inflammatory stimulation, as both conditions increase inflammatory biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) [ 83 ]. Several adjustable lifestyles, such as lower physical activity and unhealthy dietary patterns, are correlated with an increased risk of both obesity and depression/anxiety [ 83 , 84 ]. On the other hand, weight perception, lesser social support, and social networks could augment the risk of anxiety in obese persons [ 82 ].…”

“…Although other studies have demonstrated a relationship between obesity and depression, few studies have shown a definite relationship between anxiety and obesity. [19][20][21] Another study with 94 female participants enrolled in family health centers concluded that obesity increased the risk of anxiety and depression. 22 According to United States National Health and Nutrition study data, there is a positive relationship between BMI and depression, which is significantly noticeable when BMI is 30 kg/m 2 or above.…”
