Adiposity and Chronic Inflammation in Young Women Predict Inflammation during Normal Pregnancy in the Philippines

Abstract: Levels of overweight/obesity and inflammation in young adulthood, before pregnancy, are important predictors of inflammation in the third trimester of pregnancy. These results may have implications for addressing the growing concern about the contribution of obesity to adverse birth outcomes, and they suggest that factors that influence the regulation of inflammation, before pregnancy and independent of adiposity, may be important in shaping the inflammatory response to pregnancy.

“…There is extensive evidence of a relation between weight gain and low‐grade inflammation in the nongravid population . In line with our results, weight gain during pregnancy has been related to maternal hsCRP levels in some , but not all, previous reports . It is generally accepted that inflammation associated with weight gain is related to secretions of proinflammatory biomarkers from adipose tissue .…”

“…Briefly, venipuncture blood samples were collected from n = 1,759 participants in 2005. From these samples we selected n = 395 female participants for DNA methylation analysis, based on their participation in a pregnancy tracking study initiated in 2009 (McDade, Borja, Largado, Adair, & Kuzawa, ). In addition, we randomly selected n = 99 samples from male participants.…”
